The Work of the Holy Spirit: Sanctification

Positional Sanctification
To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ:
1 Peter 1:1-2

And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
I Corinthians 6:11

What God Has Already Done

1. He has already made you His.

2. He has already made you Holy in Christ.

3. He has already made you a Saint.

Practical/Progressive Sanctification
1. The process by which we become more like Jesus.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
Romans 8:28-29

Practical/Progressive Sanctification
2. In this process we learn to live out our new identity.

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Philippians 2:12-13

The Holy Spirit Sanctifies

1. By Convincing us of our Sins. John 16:7-11

2. By Guiding us in Truth. John 14:26, 16:13, 17:17

3. By empowering us to walk in Holiness.

We Must Cooperate In Our Sanctification

1. By confessing and repenting of sin.

2. By Imitating Christ

3. By Walking in the Spirit. Galatians 5:16-17

Future Sanctification

Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
1 John 3:2-3
