Bible Study and Group Discussion

Read Joshua 6

https://www.bible.com/bible/116/jos.6.NLT
1. So far in our study of Joshua, we’ve seen a series of God’s promises and His commands. In vs.1-5, what did God promise? What did He command?
2. What similarities do you find between God’s plan to take Jericho and the crossing of the Jordan (refer to Joshua 3:1-17)? What lessons do you think God was trying to teach the Israelites?
3. Most of Canaan was taken through ordinary military means. Why do you think God chose to give Jericho to Israel in this miraculous way?
4. Has God ever told you to do something that made no sense, but it became clear later what He was up to? Describe what happened. What impact did that have on your relationship with God?
5. Do you usually make your own plan and ask God to bless it, or ask God to give you His plan and ask Him to help you follow it? What’s the difference? Share specific examples.
6. Are there commands in the Bible that are more difficult for you to follow than others? Are there any you disagree with and refuse to follow? Explain.
7. Why did God command Israel to destroy everything? What was God trying to teach the Israelites? What’s the lesson for us?
8. The sound of trumpets was a call to arms for the Israelites. What spiritual battles are you fighting? Have you asked God for direction? What can you do this week to better discern what God wants you to do?
9. How is our spiritual battle today similar to and different from Israel’s conquest of Jericho?
10. What lessons have you learned from Israel’s victorious conquests?

Additional Study

1 Corinthians 1:18-31 describes salvation through Christ similarly to how we might describe salvation at Jericho. Read that passage and consider: How does God save? Whom does God save? Why does God save in this way?

Spiritual Practice
A spiritual practice is something we can do to help us live in and enjoy God’s grace. We hope these will become a regular part of your life, so that walking and talking with God is the most natural thing you do.

Identify your spiritual battles. Ask God what He wants you to know and do. Courageously take these steps and ask Him for victory.
Memory Verse
Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by Your truth and teach me, for You are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in You. Psalm 25:4-5 (NLT)

Prepare for Next Sunday
