Ice Breaker: Do you find prayer to be difficult or easy?
As Pastor Jonathan reminded us, "problems push you to God" and even more specifically, toward prayer. What examples of problems in your own life have pushed you toward God?
Prayer is about engaging with God. It is mysterious and powerful and it causes us to have to trust. Read 2 Corinthians 12:8 (NIV). What did God mean when He replied to Paul's requests to take away his pain by saying "my power is made perfect in your weakness"? Have you seen God's power come through problems either in your own life or in the lives of people you know?
Pastor Jonathan gave us one truth that will help reduce the frustrations with God that we often face in life. He said, that "prayer is not about just about fixing problems, but mostly about forming people". There is an inner work that's happening to us when we pray. It shapes us as believers. Ask yourself this question, do you prefer fixing over forming?
Read Luke 22:42. What does it mean to be "living in the 'Yet' "? Jesus molded this perfectly for us in this scripture.
Maybe praying is new to you. Pastor Jonathan shared 3 tips on how to approach prayer. Read these 3 tips and then read Joel 2:32 (KJV). Reflect on the use of the words "whosoever" and "deliver" in this scripture.
This is my problem: say it, He already knows
I need you, I trust you: shows you're trying
Help me: to see or know the next right thing
Jesus means salvation. We don't know why problems happen but we do know what we are told in Romans 8:28. Read this verse and pray over it.
