Live and Love
1 Peter 1:17-25
Pastor Jerry Koller
We must continue to keep in mind that the overall purpose of this letter was to encourage and challenge the saints to live out their faith even in the midst of trials, adversity, and suffering. The encouragement and challenge found in today’s Scripture passage is summed up in two words: Living and Loving.
· Redeemed means to release by paying a ransom.
· It has to do with restoring "something back, into the possession of its rightful owner; to cause to be released to oneself by payment of the ransom."
· Empty has to do with being without profit, with being ineffectual as far as living for the glory of God is concerned.
· Precious means flawless or unblemished.
· Romans 6:23 informs us that the wages of sin is death.
Salvation is found in no one or anything else.
· The term born again comes from the same word that is translated new birth in verse 3.
· The idea is being born from above rather than being a physical birth. Our new birth is not a physical new birth but a spiritual one.
· The word perishable is the same word that is found in verse 18 where Peter said:
The word seed has to do with something that is sowed. It is tied to parentage.
The word of God is better understood as a reference to Jesus, God the Son, Himself. John 1:1 identifies Jesus as the Word.
· Calling on the Father would be a reference to prayer.
· It is always good to solicit help from God.
Verse 17 says God judge’s each man’s work impartially.
· The word judge has to do with assessing or determining something (someone) in order to find something good rather than finding fault.
· He does so impartially. We are not judged by different standards. For God does not show favoritism. (Rom. 2:11)
· Favoritism simply means to show unfair treatment of a person or group based on prejudice; to unfairly discriminate.
The phrase "each man’s work" is a reference to the fruit exhibited as we live out our faith.
We are to live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. (vs. 17)
· Fear is found 45 times in the New Testament.
· It’s translated respect 1x.
· It’s translated respectful 1x.
· It’s translated reverence 1x.
· It is translated sense of awe 1x.
· 37 times, it is translated fear.
In this context, fear is an objective understanding of someone or something.
· It includes a respect for His authority and dignity.
· It includes being apprehensive or uneasy.
· The uneasiness or apprehension comes from living according to worldly principles rather than being holy in all we do because God is holy.
We ourselves are not the source of our purity.
Every saint is to have a sincere love for all who are in the body of Christ for we are one body and Jesus is our Head.
We are to do so deeply—from the heart.
Because we love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, we are to love all who are His deeply from the heart.
Together, let’s live and love.
Happy Birthday!

Oktoberfest Celebration: 11/6

A Time to Give On Sunday, November 6, we will receive a special Oktoberfest Offering.  During our morning worship service, we will have an opportunity to present a monetary gift to God in thanksgiving for His abundant blessings and in joyful celebration of being a church who is committed to being what God wants us to be.  We will receive an extremely important Oktoberfest Offering which will be used solely for payment of our building mortgage (annually about $36,000.00).  Besides celebrating God’s goodness, our Oktoberfest Celebration will also be a time when we can recommit ourselves to fulfilling God’s calling “To Know Him and Make Him Known” and to the goal of living out our faith together. We are looking forward to what 2023 will bring as we see how God will use our building to impact the lives of others in our community.  If you are unable to join us for the service, we hope you’ll consider either mailing or making an online contribution ahead of time.  Your offering is vital to our ability to pay the mortgage.  We thank you for prayerfully considering how you can contribute. A Time of Fellowship Following our worship service on November 6, we will enjoy a time of food and fellowship with a Potluck Dinner.  Please bring a main/side dish AND a dessert to share that feeds at least 10-12 people.  Sign up at https://www.PerfectPotluck.com/LXBV1183to let us know what you’re bringing and to avoid too many duplicate dishes. A Time to Help If you’re able to help with the potluck (set-up, serving, and/or clean-up), please contact Kim Collins.
