What Must We Do?
1 Peter 1:13-16
Pastor Jerry Koller
The first command Peter delivers, in light of the truths presented, deals with preparation: Prepare your minds for action.
· A literal translation would read: Therefore gird up the loins of your mind.
Gird means to prepare, such as preparing for a military confrontation.
· to put a girdle on or around something
Using this imagery, Peter is telling the saints that they must remove any obstacles that may hinder them from living in a holy manner.
The mind is the seat of intelligence and the controller of behavior. It is where we think and reason.
The heart cannot act upon what the mind cannot comprehend.
Conform means to adapt, to be similar or in line with.
· Not any longer.
Just because we are new creations in Christ, that does not mean we are totally immune from conforming or adapting to the pattern of this world. If such were the case, there would be no need for the Holy Spirit to sanctify us.
Transformed means to change from one form to another—one set of principles to another.
· Prepare your minds for action.
· The heart cannot act upon what the mind cannot comprehend.
· Stop conforming to the patterns of this world.
· We must be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
Gird up the loins of your mind.
The second imperative is found in verse 13: Be self-controlled.
· keep sobor in spirit (NASB)
· being sobor-minded (ESV)
The third imperative: Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.
· The life we live in the here-and-now must be lived with an eye on the future.
· Biblical hope is something that will come true because it is a strong and confident expectation
Have you prepared your minds for action?
Are you being conformed or transformed?
· Are you continually choosing not to be conformed to the patterns of the world?
· Are you being transformed by the renewing of your minds?
Are you self-controlled—in control of yourselves—your thoughts, your desires, your actions?
Are you resisting obstacles that may hinder you from living a holy life that is pleasing to God?
Are you living with an eye on the future?
Happy Birthday!

Oktoberfest Celebration: 11/6

A Time to Give On Sunday, November 6, we will receive a special Oktoberfest Offering.  During our morning worship service, we will have an opportunity to present a monetary gift to God in thanksgiving for His abundant blessings and in joyful celebration of being a church who is committed to being what God wants us to be.  We will receive an extremely important Oktoberfest Offering which will be used solely for payment of our building mortgage (annually about $36,000.00).  Besides celebrating God’s goodness, our Oktoberfest Celebration will also be a time when we can recommit ourselves to fulfilling God’s calling “To Know Him and Make Him Known” and to the goal of living out our faith together. We are looking forward to what 2023 will bring as we see how God will use our building to impact the lives of others in our community.  If you are unable to join us for the service, we hope you’ll consider either mailing or making an online contribution ahead of time.  Your offering is vital to our ability to pay the mortgage.  We thank you for prayerfully considering how you can contribute. A Time of Fellowship Following our worship service on November 6, we will enjoy a time of food and fellowship with a Potluck Dinner.  Please bring a main/side dish AND a dessert to share that feeds at least 10-12 people.  Sign up at https://www.PerfectPotluck.com/LXBV1183to let us know what you’re bringing and to avoid too many duplicate dishes. A Time to Help If you’re able to help with the potluck (set-up, serving, and/or clean-up), please contact Kim Collins.
