Faith That Works - Week 5
James 2:14-26

In our spiritual journey with God, which matters more faith or works?

This series:
Learning from James how to make our faith work in real life & helping others do the same.

Recap:
Week 1 - Trials
Week 2 - Temptation
Week 3 - Treatment of Others: Attitude & Action
Week 4 - Treatment of Others: Favoritism
Week 5 - Treatment of Others: Faith & Works

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds (works)? Can such faith save them? James 2:14
TRUTH 1: Faith saves us

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

“Grace means there is nothing you can do to make God love you more and there is nothing you can do to make God love you less. He just loves you!" ―Philip Yancey, What's So Amazing About Grace?

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Romans 10:9-10

Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action (works), is dead. James 2:15-17

But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds (works).”Show me your faith without deeds (works),and I will show you my faith by my deeds (works). James 2:18
TRUTH 2 - Works are a part of faith

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. Matthew 3:8

You believe (have faith) that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? James 2:19-20

Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. James 2:21-22

And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. James 2:23-24

In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? James 2:25

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds (works) is dead. James 2:26
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10

Write a prayer: Where are you with faith & works? Ask God to lead you.
PCC Benediction
May you jump into the arms of Jesus.
And may He push you out into the world.
May you be healed as you participate in the healing of others.
Not because you must, but because you may.
This is why we were born!
