September 4th, 2022 - Week 35 - Rev. Jeff Bender

We’re getting near the end of our study!

We finished chapter 19 last week, now let’s jump into chapter 20.

But let’s give a brief recap of last week.

Chapter 17 gave us the destruction or judgment of the false one world religion,’

Chapter 18 gave us the judgment on the economic and commercial systems.

Chapter19 gave us the judgment on the Anti-Christ and the false prophet.

Christ is preparing to usher in the Millennial reign-1000 years of peace.

Before he can do that, all those other things had to happen as well as we’ll see, the binding of Satan.

Chapter 20 starts with the binding of Satan for 1000 years and ends with his final judgment in the lake of fire.
The first part of Satan’s judgment is started by an angel who comes down from heaven (Satan was banished from there).

The bottomless pit is NOT hell. It is a temporary holding cell until God needs to use him again, then after that, he’s tossed into hell.

It’s not spelled out in the Bible, but many assume that it is the same pit described in Jude & 2 Peter
The word HELL is used only here (Tartarus), not the same word used for hell in other places.

In other words, a temporary place awaiting final judgment.
Here we see the terms used in the Bible all refer to Satan.

He was the serpent in the garden, the dragon in Revelation, the devil when Jesus was tempted, Satan when Jesus told him to get thee behind me.
All the forces of evil are gone, the people died in the Battle of Armageddon, the beast and false prophet were thrown into the Lake of fire, now finally the devil is bound.

No more evil (at least for the next 1000 years).
Those on the thrones are the believers from the Old Testament and the church age.

The next group are those who were martyred during the tribulation. Some for witnessing for Jesus, others who refused the mark.
The Bible teaches 2 resurrections.
The 2nd is for everyone who refused Christ.
That’s us and all believers.

We are blessed and will be holy because we trusted Christ.

The 2nd death is only for unbelievers.

There’s a saying. Born once die twice, born twice, die once.
All believers will rule with Christ for that 1000-year reign.
So, Satan’s final judgment hasn’t happened yet. WHY?

Because he has to be able to tempt people who have never been tempted before.
A couple of things. When he says Gog and Magog, he’s not talking about the nations that fight earlier in revelation.

He’s basically saying “Like” God and Magog. These nations have now become like God and Magog.

How did this happen? If there is 1000 years of total peace with no temptation, what’s up?

The first question is who originally gets into the 1000 years?

It’s not us believers or anyone else before the rapture. We’re ruling now, remember?

And since most believe that all the wicked were killed before this 1000 years, it has to be believers who survived the tribulation.

God always has a remnant. These living believers now have children and grandchildren etc who have never had the opportunity to choose good over evil.

And it seems that the human heart will continue to be wicked.
Once again, the city is Jerusalem, and the enemy wants to attack it.

So, he deceived a whole bunch of people and turned them against the Christians that were living at this time.

Just like the garden of Eden, when they lived without any evil influence, they caved the minute it was present.

Since believers will be “ruling” that means there will be laws and justice will happen quickly.

Remember, there are 3 ways to be tempted, the world, the flesh, and the devil.

No devil, but we still have our flesh to tempt us.

Man’s nature (the ones born after the believers got there, and the believers) will still not be able to follow the law. Just like now and when God was working with Israel.

These unbelievers did not appreciate the peace they lived in and rebelled against God, as usual!

A perfect environment cannot produce a perfect heart.

But before they could do any harm to the believers, God wiped them out.
Total destruction of the enemies of God.

And finally, what we’ve been waiting for . . .
He gathers up all these malcontents, promises them great things, but is in reality looking to betray them.

He wants as much company in hell as he can get. And he wants the things that God loves to be destroyed.
Everything the devil does to us is an act of betrayal against us.

He promises great things, but his desire is to betray and kill us.

He’s now in the lake of fire where he does NOT rule, but is being tormented day and night along with the anti-Christ and the false prophet.

And soon to be joined by those who reject Christ.
This is now the judgment of all those who rejected Christ in all time.

Jesus is the one on the throne.
The earth and sky fled, leaving nowhere for anyone to hide.

The dead, both great and small. . .

Those represented were great (powerful rulers, kings, leaders of nations, powerful businessmen)

And small-down to the lowliest peasant.

All were judged.
What books?

1) The Bible-this will be the standard by which they are judged.

2) Book of works-3 reasons-
a. To let those people, list all their “good works” to show that works aren’t enough
b. To also show that they rejected Jesus and did follow after Satan
c. But also, to determine the degree of punishment they will receive.
Everyone will be judged by the light they have received.

Not all of hell will be the same.

There are degrees of punishment.
As believers our sins have been blotted out, but they are not blotted out for those who don’t believe.

They will all be listed.
Revelation 20:14 - NIV84
Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.
Hades or Sheol is the place of the dead. Before any of this happens, if you die without Christ, you go to Hades.

Hades is not hell, but it is a place of torment.
Hades is a 2 compartment place. A paradise side and a torment side. Until Jesus died, everyone went to one of those 2 sides.

When Jesus rose again, he took the paradise side with him and left it empty.

The torment side is still full. That is what was cast into the lake of fire.

That’s the 2nd death. Born once-die twice.

Since there is nor more sin, there will be no more death, so death itself was cast in the fire.
The last book mentioned was this book. The Book of Life.

Did they open it? Probably, to show that the person’s name was NOT in the book.

Recently some Christians have tried to downplay hell or say it doesn’t exist, or they teach annihilation.

That’s the teaching that sinners will simply cease to exist, God will annihilate them.

But the Bible is plain in so many areas that Hell is real and people will go there if they reject Christ.

God never sugar coats what is real so we fully understand what’s at stake.

Do we really understand what’s at stake?
