You Have Help From Above

Foundation Scripture: John 16:5-7 NKJV

For a few moments, I want to talk about the MOST IMPORTANT PERSON on the PLANET TODAY...and that is none other than – THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

In John’s Gospel Chapter 14...Here we have Jesus coming to the end of his earthly life and ministry...he is headed to the cross, about to die for the sins of the world, be raised from the dead and ascend back to the Father and He is preparing His disciples for what is about to take place...

Now, if there was any question...who Jesus was referring too...He makes it clear in verse 26...

Now, this conversation about the Helper continues in John 16:5-7 (Main Text):

Now...Imagine with me for a moment – You HAVE THE WALKING ANSWER with You!!!

Jesus tells His disciples He has to go away...but the Person He is sending is “another Helper”

Another – is used to refer to an additional person or thing of the same type as the one already mentioned.

The Holy Spirit is not less than Jesus...He is as Jesus is...only He is not confined to a physical body...

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS TO US – WHAT JESUS WAS TO HIS DISCIPLES!

I. Jesus is Our Example

a. He set a pattern in which we are to follow...and he relied on the Holy Spirit in his earthly life and ministry...

b. If Jesus relied on the Holy Spirit to accomplish His Purpose and Assignment in the earth, how much more do you and I?

c. Too often we wait until we get into difficult situations to ASK GOD for HELP in the difficult situations and circumstances of life...(certainly that is appropriate) but we fail to realize He wants to be involved in the smallest of details of our life...(Wife lost Hand Soap Story)

II. Jesus Sent the Helper...Why Are We Not Receiving more help from the Helper? (There’s More, There’s More In Store)

a. First Reason: A Lack of Sensitivity to Who the Holy Spirit is...

1. In many cases the Holy Spirit has been misrepresented...I grew up in church and you would hear things like, “I caught it...”

2. The Holy Spirit is not an “It” He’s not a force, He’s not a tongue, He’s not an emotional experience -He is a Person, the Third Person in the Trinity, He is as much of God as Jesus and the Father is...The Paraclete – He can be Pleased and Grieved!

1. In this passage, Jesus uses the personal pronoun HE 6 times to make sure there is no mistake that the “HELPER” is in fact a PERSON.

2. The Holy Spirit functions as a PERSON:

3 He Guides
4 He Speaks
5 He Hears
6 He Shows You Things to Come

c. The Holy Spirit LONGS to have a relationship with you...He LONGS to Help You fulfill your purpose in life...

1. The word communion in the Greek is koinonia which means fellowship, partnership, intimacy

2. The Spirit of God wants to have a close relationship with you...

3. We can get closer to the Holy Spirit by spending time with Him...talking to Him in our Prayer and Word time, acknowledging Him as a Person, yielding to His inner leadings...

Second Reason: A Lack of Awareness of the Holy Spirit’s Indwelling Presence

Here in 1 Corinthians the Apostle Paul writing to the church at Corinth...there’s some competitive jealousy going on...some worldliness...folks bragging about who baptized them and he asks this question...

Are you not AWARE that you are God’s temple and that the Holy Spirit has his home in you?

1 Corinthians 3:16 (Barclay)

When you became born again, the Holy Spirit came to live on the inside of you. You became his house...now...

Now, imagine if Jesus was here in His physical body and said, "Hey...I would like to spend 2 weeks at your house."

Illustration: Now, there are just certain things you not going to be doing or saying if you had the physical presence of Jesus in your home for 2 weeks...probably 2 sinless weeks...

When We Need Help...before we jump on the Phone and “Dial a Friend” – We need to Dial up the Holy Spirit...and check on the inside...first!

Yield to the Help...He is always nudging us...prompting us...on the inside...case in point

Story: During the Pandemic I was carrying some excess weight. I had just exited a winter season in my life. Food was comfort, but I couldn’t fit any of my clothes.

Number One: The Holy Spirit Helps Us Understand God’s Word

You have within you a personal guide who will give you revelation (Rhema) into the Word of God. The scriptures will come ALIVE to you...when you ask the Holy Spirit to help you...He is your guide into all truth (reality).

The Holy Spirit will help you understand God’s Word... (Story of when I was in college – the Holy Spirit gave me revelation after coming from a Wednesday Night Bible Study).

The Holy Spirit is the revealer of truth – He will show us what has been given to us.

The Holy Spirit helps us lay hold to the Promises of God.

Ask the Holy Spirit to give you revelation...in a particular area...watch the light come on..

Number Two: The Holy Spirit Helps Bring what Jesus said to your remembrance

When you download this Word onto the hard-drive of your spirit...the Holy Spirit acts like a “mouse” on a computer –

He will point and click and pull up the scriptures, verses, the things that the Lord has said to you...and bring them to your remembrance...at the right moment, at the right time, in the right season...

Number Three: The Holy Spirit Empowers us to Live a Godly Life

It’s impossible for you to live in the level of victory and success that God has ordained for you to walk in APART from the Holy Spirit working in your life.

You are called to be witnesses in this earth...light and salt.

Boldness is a result of the Holy Spirit in your life.
