Five Imperatives
Psalm 100
Pastor Jerry Koller
Psalm 100 can also be considered a call to worship. It is possible that it was sung by a choir to summon the people who were outside the Temple to proceed into the Temple for worship.
Shout for joy to the LORD...
· The word shout is an imperative. Imperatives are words or sentences that ask or tell someone to do something.
· The Jewish worshippers were being instructed to cast aside their restraint.
The imperative is given to all the earth.
The third imperative found in the psalm is also found in verse two: Come before him with joyful songs.
· Joy is a supernatural delight in God and in God's goodness.
· It is developed in us by the Holy Spirit.
· It is not an emotional state that needs to be worked up in us.
In verse 2 the psalmist gives a second imperative: Worship the Lord with gladness.
What is the greatest delight we may have in God? Know that the Lord is God. (vs. 3)
· We live in a pluralistic world that believes there is no such thing as God, or that there are many gods.
· There is only one true God. It is he who made us.
· Verse 3 tells us it is He who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Such a metaphor was used by Jesus, who (in John 10) said,
The fourth imperative demands, we should Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise...
· Gates and courts were a part of the Temple complex.
· Solomon’s Temple had a number of gates but the Tabernacle had only one: The Entrance Gate.
· One would pass through this gate in order to access the Outer Court.
For us, the gate is a reference to Jesus, for there is no other way that we can come to God but through Him.
The fifth imperative is: Give thanks to him and praise his name.
· Thanks and praise should characterize the manner in which we live.
· The lives we live are our spiritual act of worship.
No wonder why the Psalmist declared: For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
This still holds true for you and me today because God does not change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His faithfulness continues through all generations.

It has been determined that they need to be replaced.
