Sermon Text – Jonah 1:7-17
Sermon Idea – God chooses and pursues us for His divine purpose
Outline:
1. No Way Out v.7
7 “Come on!” the sailors said to each other. “Let’s cast lots. Then we’ll know who is to blame for this trouble we’re in.” So they cast lots, and the lot singled out Jonah
Psalms 139:7-10
7 I can never escape from your Spirit!
I can never get away from your presence!
8 If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I go down to the grave, you are there.
9 If I ride the wings of the morning,
if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
and your strength will support me.
2. Disobedience causes Collateral Damage v.8-10
8 Then they said to him, “Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we’re in. What is your business and where are you from? What is your country and what people are you from? 9 He answered them, “I’m a Hebrew. I worship Yahweh, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.” 10 Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What is this you’ve done?” The men knew he was fleeing from the Lord’s presence, because he had told them.
Definition of collateral damage

v.17 Now the Lord had appointed a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the fish three days and three nights.

6 Whatever the Lord pleases, He does,
In heaven and on earth, in the seas and in all the ocean depths
