Discussion Questions
1. What stood out to you about the message to the church at Laodicea? From your notes on the message (Revelation 3:14-22), what was a notable challenge or encouragement?
2. Jesus said to the church at Laodicea: “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot.” The city of Laodicea had neither soothing, hot springs nor refreshing, cold water. (Cold ≠ antagonistic in this context.) It was all lukewarm and putrid. The church was like lukewarm water, and Jesus wishes they were good for something (either refreshing cold or healing warm). For you, what is the antidote to spiritual lukewarmness. What brings you back to being bold, available, and refreshing?
3. How can affluence and an easy life tempt us toward arrogance or self-sufficiency? As Westerners, we don’t experience as many of the extremes of poverty, persecution, and suffering as some of our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world. What can you do to avoid the pitfalls that can accompany success and prosperity?
4. What’s your reaction to Jesus’ invitation to open the door to deeper fellowship with him? What are the attitudes of the heart and the daily actions in our lives that can open the door wide to Jesus?
5. Jesus calls us to endure and conquer through the trials and temptations of life. And to look forward to an ETERNITY reigning with him. Is it easy or hard for you to think/act with this kind of long-term perspective? How does our culture disregard and downplay an eternal perspective? How can you actively push back for yourself on this short-term thinking? What about eternity motivates you today?
6. How can your Life Group embrace boldness and availability in your interactions with each other? With your One Life? And what can you do, as an individual or as a group, to make a difference during Love You Des Moines Days?
7. Review the six main points of the message. Jesus offers us not an easy life, but a meaningful life. What’s keeping you from “the life you’ve always wanted”? Of the six main points, what stands out to you as your best next step?
