The story of the Lost Son is one of Jesus' most famous stories, one in which we find ourselves in and discover God in new ways. This story reveals the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Today we begin with the Good, the heart of God.
It's important to note the backstory, that this is the last of three stories that Jesus shared. Take time to read through Luke 15:1-10 (NLT). What is revealed about the heart of God in the following verses (specifically in verses 7 and 10)?
Read and reflect through today's story found in Luke 15:11-32 (NLT). What is revealed about the Father's heart, especially in verse 20? What do you note about His anticipation and compassion?
By our culture's standards, we'd expect the father to condemn his son for his actions. But, this father clearly has a heart of celebration, not condemnation (v. 22-24). Why do we tend to expect God to be punitive and harsh? Why is it difficult to see Him as one who celebrates you?
In the next two weeks, we'll discover ourselves in the lives and responses of the two brothers. But, our challenge for this week is to consider the question: How much like the Father am I?
Answer this question after also reflecting on the following verse (shared in two versions).
*I must choose the Father's Heart for Everyone.
Think of "that person" in your life. When you're tempted to condemn and ignore, how can you reflect the Father's heart with compassion and celebration?
As a result of this message and discussion, what are your next steps?
