We each have a 3-fold call that takes on a unique shape in a specific place.

To live into our call we need…
Wk 2 …the courage like Deborah
Wk 3 …the spirit of God to indwell our abilities like the Laborers
Wk 4 …faith filled mat carrying supporters
Wk 5 …view our ordinary differently

Interview with Karen Bowman, PCCer/School Teacher

BIG IDEA: God uses our ordinary to be helpful in advancing His extraordinary.

PHOEBE
I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a deacon in the church inCenchrea. 2 Welcome her in the Lord as one who is worthy of honor among God’s people. Help her in whatever she needs, for she has beenhelpful to many, and especially to me. Romans 16:1-2

LYDIA
We boarded a boat at Troas and sailed straight across to the island of Samothrace, and the next day we landed at Neapolis. From there we reached Philippi, a major city of that district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. And we stayed there several days. Acts 16:11-12

On the Sabbath we went a little way outside the city to a riverbank, where we thought people would be meeting for prayer, and we sat down to speak with some women who had gathered there. One of them was Lydia from Thyatira, a merchant of expensive purple cloth, who worshiped God. As she listened to us, the Lord opened her heart, and she accepted what Paul was saying. Acts 16:13-14

She and her household were baptized, and she asked us to be her guests. “If you agree that I am a true believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my home.” And she urged us until we agreed. Acts 16:15

When Paul and Silas left the prison, they returned to the home of Lydia. There they met with the believers and encouraged them once more. Then they left town. Acts 16:40

“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Thyatira (Macedonia)... Revelation 2:18

BIG IDEA: God uses our ordinary to be helpful in advancing His extraordinary.
1. Phoebe- helpful to many and made a difference (general)
2. Lydia - helpful in starting a church (specific)

BARRIERS TO USING OUR ORDINARY
--Doubt
--Disobedience
--Distraction

WHAT IF DO or YOU DON’T...

APPLICATION
Where is God calling you to be helpful in ordinary ways that may advance His extraordinary?

Does anyone dare despise this day of small beginnings? They’ll change their tune when they see Zerubbabel setting the last stone in place!” Zechariah 4:10

REFLECTION
1. Confess: Doubt, Distracted, Disobedience
2. Ask: For God to help you live into your ordinary call
PCC BENEDICTION
May you jump into the arms of Jesus.
And may He push you out into the world.
May you be healed as you participate in the healing of others.
Not because you must, but because you may.
This is why we were born!
Beyond Sunday
During this 9-week series, we will focus on what it means to be called by God. Simply put, we are Ordinary People with Ordinary Callings. We each have an ordinary call that takes a unique shape in a specific place. Our ordinary call is 3-fold: Loving God & others (Connection), making disciples (Multiplication) and healing a broken world (Restoration). The SHAPE it takes is based on our Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality and Experiences. The place we find ourselves is where God has positioned us in the world for His work to be completed. The place we find ourselves is where God has positioned us in the world. This week, we reflect on how doubt, distraction and disobedience can hinder our ordinary calling from helping advance God’s extraordinary.

1. In what ways are you living more or less into your 3-fold calling? Why or why not?

2. Reflect on how doubt causes you to believe that your ordinary life is not helpful in advancing God’s extraordinary Gospel? When do you feel most like this?

3. Read what is said about Phoebe in Romans 16:1-2. What is ordinary about her? How has God used her in being helpful in advancing His extraordinary plan?

4. Read the story of Paul’s encounter with Lydia in Acts 16:11-15, 40, Revelation 2:18. What is ordinary about her? How has God used her in being helpful in advancing His extraordinary plan? (Note: The church of Thyatira was the first established Christian Church in all of Europe.)

5. How does doubt, distraction, and disobedience cause you to miss out on doing the ordinary that could help to advance God’s extraordinary? What would be different about your life or in the world if others had held back from doing the ordinary that helped to advance God's extraordinary?

6. Take some time to do the following:
Confess: Doubt, Distracted, Disobedience
Ask: For God to help you live into your ordinary call

Daily Prayer:
Lord, help me to live into my 3-fold calling (Connection, Multiplication, Restoration), understand my SHAPE, and partner with you in the location you have placed me in this world.
