Conversation Starter
What’s something you wish you had learned a long time ago?
Begin your study with prayer
Pause for a few minutes to quiet your heart and mind. Then ask God for insight and direction as you study and reflect on this week’s lesson
Bible Study and Group Discussion
Read 2 Peter 2:12-22.
1. Peter describes, in at least 15 ways, the character and nature of false teachers. Make a list of specific ways he describes them. What are a few examples of what these look like?
2. What words would you use to describe the opposite of each of these traits? Which characteristics need further cultivating in your life?
3. What does Peter say will happen to false teachers? Why do you think he uses such strong language?
4. Who is someone you trust? How has that person helped shape who you’re becoming?
5. Peter tells us that false teachers often promise freedom. What kinds of freedom might a new or weak Christian find enticing?
6. Do you know someone whose faith is wavering? How can you help them return to the right path?
7. What does it mean that you are a slave to whatever controls you (vs. 19)? How have you seen this to be true in your life?
8. What are ways in which God’s love has set you free?
9. How is a false teacher like a dog that returns to its vomit (vs. 22)? What point is Peter trying to make?
10. What are examples you see today in which, under the banner of freedom, people are actually enslaved?
11. Name practical ways you can apply the truths from this week’s lesson to your life.

12. For further study, read Numbers 22-24

Compare and contrast Balak and Balaam with the false teachers described in 2 Peter. Do these passages reveal a sin you need to confess or avoid? Is there a truth or promise that seems significant to you?  (Numbers 22)

Spiritual Practice
A spiritual practice is training for the soul. By building these into your everyday life, you’re sure to strengthen your relationship with God.

At least twice this week, when you feel the pull to reach for your phone, read the Bible instead. Pray for God to give you and our church a deeper hunger for truth.
Memory Verse
For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13 (NLT)

Prepare for Next Sunday

Next Sunday, May 29, we’ll continue the series Remember! To prepare, read 2 Peter 3:1-10.
