What and Why
Pastor Jerry Koller
Prayer is personal communication with God.
Prayer in the Bible involves the dialogue between God and people, especially His covenant partners.
Prayer is our direct line to heaven.
Prayer is talking to God. Prayer is paying attention to God.
Question #178 of the Westminster Larger Catechism: What is prayer? The answer: "Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God for things agreeable to His will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins and thankful, acknowledgment of His mercies.”
What It Is - Prayer is the communication aspect of our relationship with God whereby we share our heart with Him.
Why Pray - Prayer expresses our dependence upon Him.
From the beginning, man has been—and always will be—dependent upon God.
Prayer Keeps Us from Drifting—It keeps us secured. It keeps us connected. It keeps us focused.
Prayer is simply "the turning of the soul to God."
Keeping our focus on God has always been essential to God’s people.
From deep within his soul, David’s heart tells him to seek God’s face.
Dependence upon God keeps us from drifting, not God.
David declared how God is his rock. Literally, he is referring to a cleft rock, which is a rock that has an opening in it.
· A cleft rock provides concealment.
· It provides protection.
A fortress provides safety and protection.
David calls God his Deliverer. A deliverer is one who rescues you from harm or danger.
God is his horn of salvation. Horns, in the bible represent a number of things. Here they are a symbol of victory, power, and strength.
God is his stronghold. A stronghold is a defensive structure that provides safety when one is under attack.
In both 2 Samuel 22 and Psalm 18, David mentions how God keeps my way secure. Dependence upon God is not a state of weakness. It is a place of strength.
Honor means approval or distinction. David’s honor and salvation does not come from him or from anyone or anything else. They depend on God.
He tells his people to Trust in him at all times. God is certainly trustworthy. Finally, David says, Pour out your hearts to him.
We share our hearts with him. David tells his people to pour out your hearts to Him.
APPLICATION
Prayer is important because it is an essential part of our relationship with God.
· How is your prayer life?
Prayer is important because it expresses our dependence upon Him.
· How is your prayer life?
Our dependence upon God keeps us from drifting.
· How is your prayer life?
And our dependence upon God keeps us secure.
· How is your prayer life?
Pour out your heart to Him.
Your honor and salvation depend upon Him. Give your hearts to Him in a spirit of praise and thanksgiving.

Children’s Sunday School Schedule

Class will meet on 5/22 and then start summer break as of 5/29.

Flower Bed Maintenance Needed

Spring is finally here and we need help maintaining the church’s flowerbeds. If you're willing to adopt-a-flower bed for the summer, please contact the church office or feel free to stop by the church at your convenience and pull weeds from whatever flowerbed catches your eye. If you contact us in advance, we can arrange for the shed to be open so you can get tools; otherwise feel free to bring your own.

Attention Graduates

As we prepare to recognize our college and high school graduates this year, we want to be sure that we don’t miss anybody. If you will be graduating, please contact the church office no later than Sunday, May 29. Also, if you let us know when your graduation open house is, we would be more than happy to publish it in upcoming bulletins. We are planning to recognize our graduates during the morning worship service on Sunday, June 5. For questions or more info, contact Kim in the office.

Camp Scholarships

If you are willing to provide a full or partial camp scholarship, please contact Kim Collins or make a donation to FBC with “Camp” noted on your check. We have students going to Lake Louise on Higher Ground, Lake Ann Camp and True Vine Horse Camp.

Fundraiser: Door Repairs and Replacement

If you have noticed when you enter the church through our main entrance, the outside steel doors are in rough shape. It has been determined that they need to be replaced. In addition, all the fire doors in the east wing need repair or adjustments; so do the double steel doors in the gym on the east side of the building. We have contacted S.A. Morman and Co. in Portage to fix these issues. The cost will run approximately $14,400.00. If there is any way you could contribute to this expense, it would be greatly appreciated. You can simply mark your donation with “Doors” and drop it in the offering on Sunday morning or make an online contribution at
https://www.shelbygiving.com/app/giving/southhavenfbc

Volunteers Needed

We would like to resume having Greeters, Ushers, and a Welcome Center attendant on Sunday mornings. If you are willing to serve in any of these areas, please contact Kim ASAP to be put on the upcoming schedule. Thank you!

1:30-6:00pm | Upstairs at FBC The need for lifesaving blood donations never takes a break. Walk-ins welcomed; appointments preferred. Call 866-642-5663 or sign-up online.
