Discussion Question
1. What is one of your hidden talents or achievements that very few people know about?
2. From your message notes and the passage, what stood out to you as stretching, encouraging, confusing, or empowering?
3. Write down at least five examples of some of your spiritual riches in Christ. Share one of these with your group.
4. The believers in the church of Smyrna experienced various hardships including affliction, poverty, slander, suffering, imprisonment, and martyrdom. And yet they stayed faithful to Jesus! Imagine that your life group had a similar experience. What would you say to one another?
5. Imagine the promise of eternal life in the presence of God and all his people. What are some of the things you are looking forward to? Aside from God, who is someone from the Scriptures you would enjoy conversing with?
6. Jesus talks about “the second death“ as the fate of those who reject the love of God in the gospel. This is the spiritual separation from God forever. Pondering this sobering reality, how does it change your perspective and actions this week toward those who do not yet embrace the gospel?
7. Share about a time that humanly speaking you should have been afraid, but you were not. Instead you experienced peace or even joy. What made the difference?
8. Read Mark 10:17-31. The theme is earthly riches and poverty compared to kingdom riches and poverty. Why is the story of the rich young ruler so tragic? And why is Jesus’ promise to Peter so motivational?
9. Suffering seems like it’s completely negative. But God promises some benefits of suffering. What might some of those be? And how can you help a friend, or perhaps even your One Life, during their time of hardship?
