The Charge
2 Timothy 4:1-4
Pastor Jerry Koller
Timothy was being charged with certain responsibilities that were essential to his ministry.
· The phrase, “I solemnly charge you” indicates that what will follow is very serious.
In verse 1, we see the parameters in which this charge is presented.
· … in the presence of God...
· … (in the presence) of Christ Jesus...
“In the presence of God” reflects the source of Timothy’s calling. This was made clear earlier in the letter where, in chapter 1, verses 8-9: “...according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling…”
Paul wants Timothy to remember that all we do will one day be judged by our Savior.

Romans 14:12

The phrase, “...His kingdom” reminds Timothy that, as the writer of Hebrews puts it: ...

Hebrews 12:28

The solemn charge itself:

2 Timothy 4:2

Preach—
This is to be Tim’s main responsibility. The other four aspects of ministry build upon this important responsibility.
When the disciples received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, what did they do? Acts 4:31 tells us they preached the word of God with boldness.
When the Apostles had the people select seven spirit-filled men to wait on tables in Acts 6, why did they do so? They did not want to become sidetracked from preaching the word of God.
What did the people in Antioch receive that the Jerusalem church already have and embrace? The word of God.
What did the Antioch church send Paul and Barnabas to Cypress to do according to Acts 13:5? Proclaim the word of God.
According to Acts 17:13, what did Paul do in Berea that stirred up the Jews? He proclaimed the word of God.
Be Ready—
...be ready in season and out of season…
· He was to look for opportunities to preach the word, when it was favorable and when it was not favorable.
Reprove—
· The word reproof has to do with confronting false doctrine.

2 Timothy 3:16

Rebuke—
This word rebuke means to convict or censure.
· When connected to the preaching of the word, this should bring men face to face with the shortcomings of their character and conduct.

James 5:19-20

Exhort—
This is a word which denotes the stimulating of godliness in another, whether by challenging or comforting.
The Directions
· With Great Patience—As far as patience is concerned, it is something that needs to be learned.
· It comes from God.
· It is also a fruit of the Spirit and is among the list in Galatians 5:22.

1 Timothy 1:16

With Great Instruction—
Ministry needs to be conducted according to sound truth; with great instruction.
Reasoning for the Charge—

2 Timothy 4:3-4

For a Time Will Come—
Day-by-day, month-by-month – year-by-year, mankind inches closer to a time when they will not endure sound doctrine.
Truth Will Be Rejected—
The word endure means to hold oneself upright or firm against a person or thing.
Seeking of Pleasurable Words—
...They will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desire and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
APPLICATION
You and I must stand strong as well.
We need to realize that in these last day, as terrible times abound, we will encounter those who will not endure sound doctrine; those who want to have their ears tickled; those who will turn aside from truth.
Do not let that happen to you or to us.
