A Glimpse into the Last Days:
Misplaced Love
2 Timothy 3:1-4
Pastor Jerry Koller
But mark this…
But know this…
Vs. 1: Terrible is the translation of a word that is only appears twice in the New Testament.
This word also has to do with being hard to bear, troublesome, dangerous, harsh, fierce, savage. They are traits that will always be present during the last days.
The last days are period of time just prior to Jesus’ second coming.
What will be the cause of these terrible times? People!
People will be...In verses 2-4, Paul lists at least 18 characteristics that will be displayed by people in the last days.
False teacher have always been present in the church.
In these verses, the Apostle is using a common literary technique. If someone wanted to emphasize a particular item in a list, he would either place it at the beginning or the end of the list. The rest of the items serve to illustrate the importance of the item of emphasis.
Misplaced Love - People will be lovers of…(something) (vs. 2) rather than lovers of God. (vs. 4)
Verse 2 says: People will be lovers of themselves (and) lovers of money. These two sins easily sum up where the world is at today.
It has been said that as society goes, so goes the church.
Out of the 16 remaining characteristics mentioned in verses 2-4, every one can be causes by selfishness. Every one can be caused by people’s love for earthly treasures.
These people will be outside the church (as they always have been), and some will be in the church. It is this group that will make the last days terrible because that is not what God intended for His people to be like.
1. The solution to misplaced love is to place it where God wants it to be. Rather than on self, we direct it to others. We must choose to love others as Jesus loves us.
2. If we seek this solution to misplaced love, there will be no place in the lives of true believers for these characteristics to dwell. When the ways of the world surface in us, we need to follow what 2 Cor, 10:5 says.
3. It may be true that as society goes, so goes the church. But you do not have to let it happen to you. Do not misplace your love.
Happy Birthday!
