Keeping an Eye on Ourselves
2 Timothy 2:16-19
Pastor Jerry Koller
2 Timothy 2:16-19
Pastor Jerry Koller
Avoid godless chatter…
· But avoid worldly and empty chatter (NASB).
· But avoid worldly and empty chatter (NASB).
Chatter has to do with empty discussion of vain and useless matters that are devoid of truth.
But avoid irreverent babble (ESV).
…those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. (vs. 16)
Their teaching will spread like gangrene.
· Faith is believing all truth about God—about His power, about His sovereignty or control over creation—and about His character and attributes
· Faith is learning about the nature of sin and the reason why life is often filled with misery, struggle, and hardships.
· Faith is accepting the radical truth about Jesus—who He is, what He has done, what He is yet to do, and what He has provided for us.
· Faith is believing what God says even though we cannot see it with our eyes, hear it with our ears, or feel it in an emotional way. Yet we write it in the tablets of our hears as if it already happened, as if we already witnessed it with our eyes, and as if we heard it with our own ears.
· Faith is trusting God because He is God.

The Greek word which is translated rejected means to thrust something away from oneself; to turn one’s back on.
As a result of their rejection, they shipwrecked their faith.
· Literally, the compound word here could be translated ship break.
· Literally, the compound word here could be translated ship break.
Hymenaeus and Philetust promoted or taught lies
This resurrection is not a reference to Jesus’ resurrection from the dead which indeed had already taken place. It is a resurrection that will not be experienced until Jesus comes again.
What is this foundation? It is a reference to God’s plan to redeem a people for Himself, a plan that was designed before creation was spoken into existence.
This solid and firm foundation is sealed with an inscription.
· A seal is a sign of authentication.
· A seal was also used to guarantee security, such as when it was used on Jesus’ tomb. And a seal indicated ownership.
The authentication has two parts to it. The Lord knows those who are His, and Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.

The authentication has two parts to it. The Lord knows those who are His, and Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.
In this two-part seal of authentication, we find the balance of divine sovereignty and human responsibility.
APPLICATION
It is not our responsibility to pass judgment on someone’s eternal status before God. Our responsibility is to share and live out the Gospel of Jesus.
Because we confess the name of Jesus, it is our responsibility to turn away from wickedness.
Let’s avoid indulging in godless chatter. Rather, let’s point people to Jesus when we can.
Let’s make sure we do not wander from the truth. The best way to do this is to live it out.
Let’s not seek to pass judgement on the spiritual condition of others based on what we see in them. Let’s leave that up to God.

Happy Birthday!

Dress Warm
You may have noticed when we've had colder weather (below 20 degrees) that the sanctuary and foyer feel chilly. This is because we have two boilers to heat the older portion of our building and the second boiler is currently not working. Parts have been ordered, but they can take at least 8 weeks to come in. In the meantime, please plan to dress in layers and be prepared if it's a colder morning.
