Instruct by Example
2 Timothy 2:14-15
Pastor Jerry Koller
Background Reminders:
· We need to remember that this is a letter written to Timothy. It is not intended to be a doctrinal treatise.
· We must keep in mind the fact that there were reasons why Paul wrote this letter.
· Paul addresses some things he needs Timothy to do.
· There are some perspectives he wants Timothy to adopt. And there are some things he wants Timothy to avoid.

2 Timothy 2:14-15

2 “Thems”

1 Timothy 1:3-4

· A myth is a traditional or legendary moral story that is not founded in truth.
· Genealogies deal with lineage and ancestry.

1 Timothy 1:6

The other group that would need reminding are those reliable men he had selected to teach the Gospel as mentioned in 2:2

2 Timothy 2:2

Timothy was to: Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.
Teach by Example

2 Timothy 2:15

2 Timothy 2:15

2 Timothy 2:15

Diligent also means to be eager or to make every effort.
Do your best, or be diligent, Paul says, to present yourself to God as one approved. · This is where the diligence must be directed.
Not only was Timothy to present himself to God for approval, he was to present himself to God as a “workman.”
· A workman was basically a laborer.
In an agricultural setting, a laborer may have picked grapes or harvested figs. He may have been a harvester of wheat.

Luke 10:2

Timothy is to do his best to present himself as a workman of God who correctly handles the word of truth (NIV).
· The NASB says: accurately handling the word of truth.
· The KJV says: rightly dividing the word of truth.
The word Paul uses literally means to cut straight or cutting straight.
In the previous chapter, Paul commands Timothy

2 Timothy 1:13

2 Timothy 1:14

Before he could remind others of things pertaining to the Gospel, he first must make sure that he is a workman that is approved by God.
· He must make sure he correctly and accurately handles the word of truth that leads to salvation.
· Timothy needs to instruct by example.
God uses workman to deliver His word of truth to a lost and dying world, whether that workman is a pastor or a traffic guard, or a mother. We are all laborers in the harvest field which is the world in which we live. Each one of us must handle the word of truth correctly, not like false teachers.
APPLICATION
1. Correctly handling the word of truth includes preaching, teaching, and sharing the Gospel. It also includes living out the Gospel in all areas of our lives.
2. Living out the Gospel must be a priority in our lives. We must pour ourselves (be diligent) into this task. This is our job requirement as workmen.
3. We have to be diligent as long as we are alive. We can never stop.
