The Crossing

Cornerstone| Behind the Curtain Part 8
Long before Jesus set foot on our planet, before He ever took on human form, He had a purpose, personality, and presence that was prophesied in the Bible. As we look toward the Christmas season, we go behind the curtain to learn who Jesus really was.

In ancient times, before concrete, foundations were set with stones and the first stone was the most important. If it wasn’t right, the whole building would be wrong. The tools to make foundations plumb and level have been around for over 4000 years and are used still today.
On Palm Sunday, the people sang the Hallel from Psalm 118:25, “Hosanna”.
Just three verses up is a passage that gives an additional glimpse behind the curtain.
Jesus refers to this verse after riding through the Eastern Gate and entering the temple
However, just before, Jesus tells the parable of the tenants.
When Jesus then quotes Psalm 118, Luke records that the religious leaders knew exactly what He was saying and describes their reaction.
Daniel described an unhewn stone that would shatter all the great kingdoms of the world and fill the earth.
Zechariah described that the cornerstone would come from the tribe of Judah.
The religious leaders were very aware of how Jesus was describing Himself, that he would be rejected and that He is the cornerstone, just as He had taught about Himself previously.
1. Jesus had to be rejected to pay the debt of sin that we all owe.
Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and the sending of the Holy Spirit fulfilled the gospel plan and salvation, the Hallel.
2. Jesus had to be rejected so that the gospel would go into the whole world.
The rejection of Jesus as the Messiah by the Jews opened the door for the gentiles without shutting the doors to the Jews. It opened the door to make salvation available to EVERYONE!
Abraham rejected the foundations of earth for the foundations of heaven even though he didn’t understand what was coming.
We live on the other side of the curtain, where earthly foundations surround us - we can be tempted to look to the idols upon those foundations.
We have a place where buildings last forever, where time doesn’t matter, where hope never fades, and where people never die built by and upon a Master Builder, Foundation Layer, Living Cornerstone, Savior, Lord, King, Father, and Friend.
