The purpose of this devotional is to help prepare you for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. You may do this as your own quiet time, but we would encourage you to gather some family or loved ones to go through it together.

John 3:1-21

John 8:12

When Jesus came to earth as a baby, He brought light to this dark world. Jesus even called Himself the light of the world.

Why is Jesus the light of the world? Because He overcame the darkness with His light. The darkness is sin and the light of Jesus is righteousness.

Sadly, when Jesus came as the light, many people rejected him because they wanted to live in darkness. They wanted to hold onto their sin, and so they thought that they could hide in the shadows. But light always exposes the darkness.

Have you ever tried to hide a sin from someone?

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you know that you will get in trouble for doing something, but you do it anyway, and you try to keep it to yourself?

What usually happens?

Someone eventually finds out and you then get in trouble. Think about the horrible feeling you get in your stomach when you are keeping your sin a secret. But then also think about the wonderful feeling you get when you have no secret sin in your life. Living in the light of God is what makes us feel amazing. Jesus lived in the light and he wants us to live in the light. The light also gives us warm.

Have you ever been outside and when the sun comes out from under one of the clouds you feel the extra heat from the sun. This is a great feeling! This is why so many people were drawn to Jesus, because there was such a spiritual warmth to his person.

Are you walking in the light right now?

Are you free from any known sin?

Do you need to confess your sin to someone so that you can be a child of the light?
