THE MAGNIFICAT: MARY’S REACTION TO THE NEWS OF JESUS
Overcoming What’s Overwhelming
Luke 1:46-49
20211205
How do you handle being overwhelmed?
How does Mary handle it?
46 And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
Luke 1:46-49
True worship is personal. “My soul glorifies the Lord.”
True Worship comes from the heart. “My soul glorifies the Lord.”
True Worship brings glory to God. “My soul glorifies the Lord.”
True Worship has God as its object. “My soul glorifies the Lord.”
True worship is joyful. “and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,”
True worship acknowledges God as personally acting on my behalf “and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,”
TRUE WORSHIP HAPPENS WHEN GOD EXPERIENCES ME GLORIFYING HIM.
Philosopher Peter Kreeft says “The opposite of theism is not atheism, it’s idolatry.”
John Calvin said that “our hearts are a perpetual factory of idols”
An idol is whatever you look at and say in your heart of hearts, “If I have that then I’ll feel my life has meaning, then I’ll know my life has value, then I’ll feel significant and secure.” – Tim Keller
If anything becomes more fundamental than God to your happiness, meaning in life, and identity then it is an idol. – Tim Keller
The biblical concept of idolatry is an extremely sophisticated idea integrating intellectual, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual categories.
Personal Idols – money, beauty, romantic love, family, achievement, power, access to certain social circles, health
Cultural Idols – military power, technological progress, economic prosperity – the idols of traditional cultures include family, hard work, moral virtue, duty and while those of the western culture include individual freedom, self-discovery, personal affluence and fulfillment, my personal identity . . . they promise us safety, peace and satisfaction if we will base our lives upon them
Intellectual Idols called ideologies . . . education, goodness of man, political philosophies, etc
WHEN LIFE IS OVERWHELMING WHAT DO YOU WORSHIP?
