The Angels Sing — Part 1

The Angels Sing — Part 1

Historically, the church has taught biblical truth and doctrine using song. This Christmas season, we will take a closer look at some of the songs popular this time of year, focusing on the theology ingrained in them. We will seek to gain a deeper understanding of the Christmas story through these songs. And together, we’ll stay focused on Jesus during this Advent season so that we can all experience the hope, faith, joy, peace and love of Christ as we celebrate His miraculous birth.

Portrait of Isaac Watts

Joy to The World – Verse 4
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love
Purpose of creation
Problem of sin
Plan to save us
Promised One, Jesus
People of God, the church
Physical return of Christ
Paradise, eternity with God
This “time” was when the Roman civilization had brought peace and a road system which facilitated travel; when the Grecian civilization provided a language which was adopted as the lingua franca of the empire; when the Jews had proclaimed monotheism and the messianic hope in the synagogues of the Mediterranean world. It was then that God sent His Son, the preexistent One, out of heaven and to earth on a mission.
– D. K. Campbell
Let every heart prepare Him room
– Slow down and rest
– Connect with God each day
– Join us for The Angels Sing each week

1. Share a line or two from your favorite Christmas carol. Why is it your favorite?

2. In this first week of The Angels Sing, we looked at Isaac Watts’ Joy To The World, Psalm 98, and several prophecies/fulfillments related to Christ’s birth. Were you surprised to discover that Joy To The World wasn’t intended to be a Christmas song?

3. Isaac Watts’ joyfully looked forward to Christ’s second coming. What are some reasons why it is helpful and important to remember that Christ’s birth is a key part of God’s larger plan of salvation?

4. Pastor Josh challenged us to “let every heart prepare him room” for Christ this Christmas. Specifically, how do you plan to prepare your heart for Christ this season?
