What Kind of Wisdom Do You Have?
James 3:17
Pastor Jerry Koller
“Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living and the other helps you make a life.”
James 3:13-17 talks about two kinds of wisdom: earthly and heavenly; wisdom that comes from below or wisdom that comes from above.

James 3:13

James 3:17

James 3:17

8 Characteristics of Heavenly Wisdom
1. Pure
· free from contamination or defilement
· holy

Matthew 5:8

1 John 3:3

2. Peaceable
· When we exercise wisdom that is pure or holy, that is peaceable, we become peacemakers.

Matthew 5:9

Hebrews 12:11

3. Gentle
· The Greek word translated “gentle” has no satisfactory equivalent in the English language.
· The idea behind this Greek word is that of courtesy and consideration, or to be fair and forbearing.
· It includes the characteristics of humility and patience.

Matthew 5:5

Matthew 11:28-29

4. Reasonable
· teachable and compliant
5. Full of Mercy
· forgiveness
· compassion
· assistance
· kindness
· unconditional love

Matthew 5:7

James 2:13

6. Full of Good Fruits
· every sort of good work or deed that is an outpouring of genuine faith
· Full means filled to the point of overflowing.
7. Unwavering
· to be undivided
· not to be parted
· without uncertainty or indecision
· no room for doubtfulness or inconsistency
· unshakable
8. Without Hypocrisy
APPLICATION
Wisdom is the result of interpreting and acting upon the knowledge one possesses.
How do you know which path your wisdom is following? Look at how you live life.

James 3:13

· Would you characterize the life you live as being pure?
· Would you characterize the life you live as being peace-loving?
· Is it gentle and considerate of others in a spirit of humility and patience?
· Would you characterize the life you live as being reasonable—teachable, and compliant to the ways of God?
· Would you characterize the life you live as being full of mercy?
· Is it your goal to bear good fruit for the glory of God?
· Would you characterize the life you live as being unwavering as far as doing all for the glory of God according to kingdom principles?

Cook Needed for Local Ministry

Open Door is a local ministry that has been in operation for over 20 years. A free meal is provided to anyone once a week on Tuesday afternoon. Many churches in the South Haven area participate with the First United Methodist church who hosts this ministry in their kitchen and dining hall. Each week, a different church has volunteers come to cook and/or serve the food. Since COVID-19, meals have been boxed in takeout containers, where recipients can drive up and take the desired number of containers for their household. One of the cooks is retiring and there is a need to fill this spot. I was asked if someone from FBC would like to take on this ministry of cooking. There is a retired professional chef that would be willing to train this person or team of persons who would be cooking for about 100 people once a month. A different team comes in to “box” the meal and take it to the cars in the parking lot at 6pm. If you’d like to learn more about this ministry opportunity, please catch me at church on a Sunday or contact me at 269-767-2883. One afternoon a month to help in a local ministry that helps someone stretch their food budget is one of the most worthwhile ministries I have participated in since it started, along with We Care INC. Give it some prayer time and listen for God’s answer. ~Rocky Starland
