Begin your time as a Group by having someone read Psalm 23. Today we are focusing specifically on verse 5.
Pastor Jonathan posed this question: "Have you noticed how past experiences help prepare you for where you are now?" Discuss this as a group.
"Thou preparest a table before me...": Shepherds make trips ahead of the sheep to high plateaus in order to prepare for summer grazing. How have you seen your Good Shepherd go before you? Have you ever considered He provides in ways that we may never see? Tie the following scripture into your discussion.
"...in the presence of mine enemies...": Shepherds remove poisonous plants and watch for signs of predators. Therefore, "enemies" will see God's care for us. How does this relate to your own life?
"...thou anointest my head with oil..." Shepherds care for sheep by applying an ointment on them that helps to repel flies and parasites. Our Good Shepherd cares for us in a similar way. He doesn't necessarily remove our problems, but helps us live in the midst of opposition. How do you respond to this?
"...my cup runneth over...": This is David's acknowledgment of all that God has done for him. His reflection on all that God has done to care for him has resulted in overwhelming gratitude. How do you relate to David?
*Our Shepherd prepares the way for you and prepares you for the way. Yes, we are still tempted to ask "Why?" and "What about...?" Just as sheep don't understand everything the shepherd does, neither do we. But, comfort comes in seeing His presence and care in our lives. So, what is our response to this process? To follow (stay close to the Shepherd) and trust (depend on Him).
Conclude with these two questions: How has Jesus prepared the way and me? How do I need to follow and trust next?
