“Grief, Loss, Hope, and Life”
First, it’s OKAY to grieve!
Second, grief is a COMMON human experience!
“Many of us will NEVER achieve the highs of success and notoriety that we have
worked for our WHOLE life—but we ALL will experience grief!”
worked for our WHOLE life—but we ALL will experience grief!”
Third, we shouldn’t grieve ALONE!
A burden SHARED is a burden LIGHTENED!
The dark is darker when you
are alone; so don’t be!
are alone; so don’t be!
Fourth, grief is a PROCESS!
Fifth, to grieve doesn’t mean things are HOPELESS!
1st, make WORSHIP a priority!
2nd, ask God to reveal His PURPOSE as we grieve!
3rd, be PATIENT in the process!
4th, RELY on God not yourself!
He will deliver…He is our hope!
5th, maintain a posture of GRATITUDE!
Grief is no respecter of persons!
Discuss and Reflect
Big Idea
I am pretty confident that most of us are familiar with the idiom, “Curiosity killed the cat…” but most of us don’t know the second half of the statement, “…but satisfaction brought it back.” So, we use the first half of the saying as a warning: Be careful of the dangers of unnecessary investigation or experimentation! But the second part -- "satisfaction brought it back" -- shows that the risk might be worth it. It is our hope that this series, “Curious: God’s Answers to Your Curious Questions” will eliminate any “danger” that you might associate with a curious question, and then when we see God’s answer the “risk” we’ve taken will indeed be worth it! Today, “Grief, Loss, Hope, and Life.”
Discussion Questions
Review the scriptures, the main points, watch or listen online to the message from this past weekend. What is the most significant point for you? Why?
All of will experience grief in some measure. Using care in your comments, explain a grief experience you have had. What did you learn that season of grief? What would you tell someone else who is dealing with grief today?
Elizabeth Kubler-Ross developed the “5 Stages of Grief” in 1969 which are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. If you have experienced grief or are in the middle of grief, what is your opinion of these 5 stages? Have you personally experienced any of these 5? Is there one that rises above the rest in intensity or frequency?
Read John 11:1-44. What observations about grief do you see within the story of Lazarus?
Next Steps
Grief Share is an incredible resource available here at Crossroads Church. It is a great “next step” in your process of grief or for someone you know experiencing grief at any level. The link for Grief Share is https://www.gotocrossroads.com/ministries/outreach/griefshare/
God is with you; God is for you; and there is hope and life out of grief and loss.
Prayer Focus
A phrase used this past weekend was “Grief is no respecter of persons.” In other words, many of us are in a grief season right now and need our love, care, compassion, and prayers. As you pray for each other remain sensitive to the grief and the loss some within your group may be living with. Pray for hope and the life that Jesus provides even in the middle of the most difficult places.
