Jonah 4:1-11
4:1 But this was evil to Jonah, a great evil—and it enflamed him. 2 He prayed to Adonai, and said, “Oh, Adonai, wasn’t this my word while I was yet upon my land? This is why I tried to slip away toward Tarshish. For I knew that you were a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger, but great in loyalty, and regretting evil. 3 So now, Adonai, just take my life from me—for it is better for me to die than to live!”
4 Then Adonai said, “Does it benefit you, getting yourself angry?”
5 But Jonah went out from the city and sat to the east of the city, and made for himself there a shelter, and sat under it in the shade until he saw what would happen to the city. 6 Then Adonai-God appointed a leafy plant and made it come up over Jonah to be a shade over his head, to relieve him from his evil. And Jonah was glad about the leafy plant with a great gladness. 7 Then God appointed a worm when dawn rose the next day, and it struck the leafy plant, and it dried up. 8 When the sun shone, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun struck Jonah’s head and he was fainting, and he asked for his life to die. He said, “It is better for me to die than to live!”
9 God said to Jonah, “Does it benefit you, getting yourself angry over the leafy plant?” And he said, “It does benefit me to get myself angry—enough to die!” 10 Adonai said, “You were concerned for the leafy plant, which you did not labor over, nor make grow, that was there overnight, and overnight was lost. 11 As for me, would I not be concerned for Nineveh, the great city, in which are many more than twelve ten-thousands of people who don’t know their right from their left, and many cattle?
