Introduction
And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing.
3 And He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two tunics apiece. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that city. 5 And as for those who do not receive you, as you go out from that city, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”
6 Departing, they began going throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead, 8 and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen again.
9 Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded; but who is this man about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see Him.
10 When the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done…

Jesus the Philosopher:
Answers for Life
Luke 9:1-10, August 12 & 15, 2021
Prayer Requests:
Group Discussion: Take a few minutes and find 10 highlights from last Sunday’s GateWay experience whether you were physically on campus or live streaming.
Read out loud: Luke 9:1-10
Application: This passage was never followed as prescription for ministry in the early church, it’s a description of what Jesus did to train His 12 disciples. We can derive some life principles from our ancient text:
#1. Be selective where you put your trust. “Take nothing…” vs. 3. Is your ego tied to how and how much you provide for your family? If you were to describe to someone what it means to put your trust in God rather than the things we have in this world, what would that sound like?
#2. Be appreciative for partners with you. “…whatever house you enter stay there…”vs. 4
How do you show or communicate appreciation for people who work with you and how do they communicate or show appreciation to you? When people find out I’m a pastor often the first thing they begin to tell me are all the complaints they have about their church! Do you speak well to others about GateWay and focus on the positives or do you find yourself going down the road of finding fault?
#3. Be discerning in whom you invest. “…shake the dust off your feet…” vs. 5
Who invested in you as you were beginning your working career? Who trained you and did they use positive reinforcement or negative? Who are you investing in, in any area of life?
#4. Be willing to live the Kingdom Creed. Herod wanted to know, “…who is this man…” vs. 9. Why do you think people were so reluctant to believe Jesus was the Messiah?
The Jesus Creed is, “And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27. It’s easy to physically demonstrate your love for a neighbor, but how do you demonstrate your love for God?
Family Time: Luke 9:10, read: “And when the Apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done…”. Take some time and think of all the highlights of what Jesus has done and then sit down with your kids and do this together. You’ve got to be prepared with some highlights from your life. Pray and thank God for the opportunity to serve Him!
