In both verse 13 and verse 14 the pronoun you is emphatic. The idea is “You are the only salt of the earth,” and “You are the only light of the world.”
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
Romans held that, except for the sun, nothing was more valuable than salt. Often Roman soldiers were paid in salt, and it was from that practice that the expression “not worth his salt” originated.
Thirst
Salt creates thirst. Our lives living out the Beatitudes should begin to create a thirst to those around us, those who have filled their lives with all the pleasures of the world and still their souls thirst for more.
