Sermon Title: Deep Prayer (Jonah 1:9:-2:11)
Jonah 1:9-2:11
1:9 He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Adonai, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10 The men feared with a great fear, and said to him, “What is this you have done?” (for the men knew that from the presence of Adonai he had been fleeing, because he had told them). 11 They said to him, “What should we do to you that the sea may calm down from upon us?” (for the sea was continuing its gale).
12 He said to them, “Lift me up and hurl me into the sea, and the sea will calm down from upon you, for I know it is my fault that this great gale is upon you.” 13 The men rowed to return to the dry land, but they could not, because the sea was continuing its gale upon them.
14 So they called out to Adonai, and said, “Oh please, Adonai, please don’t let us be lost on account of the life of this man. And don’t put innocent blood on us. For you are Adonai; according to your own pleasure, you have acted.” 15 Then they lifted up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea stood down from its rage. 16 Then the men feared Adonai with a great fear, and offered an offering to Adonai and swore oaths.

Prov 6:16-19
16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

2:1 Adonai appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights. 2 Jonah prayed to Adonai, his God, from the bowels of the fish.
3 He said, “I called out in my distress to Adonai, and he answered me. From the belly of Sheol I cried out—you heard my voice.
4 You cast me deep into the heart of the seas, and a current surrounded me. All your breakers and waves passed over me. 5 I myself thought I had been driven from the scope of your eyes. Still, I will continue to gaze toward the temple of your holiness.
6 Waters engulfed me—up to my neck. The abyss surrounded me. Weeds wrapped around my head. 7 To the roots of the mountains I went down—the land, its bars behind me forever. But you raised my life from the pit, Adonai my God.
8 As my life was fading, Adonai I remembered, and my prayer went to you, to the temple of your holiness.
9 Those devoted to vain idols will forsake their mercy. 10 But I, with a shout of gratitude, will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed, I will pay. Deliverance is to Adonai!”
11 Then Adonai spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto the dry land.

Bottom Line
Deep Prayer has its origins in deep honesty.

A Deep Prayer (Wesley Covenant Prayer)
Lord, I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put me to what you will, place me with whom you will.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be put to work for you or set aside for you,
Praised for you or criticized for you.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and fully surrender all things to your glory and service.
And now, O wonderful and holy God,
Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer,
You are mine, and I am yours.
So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
Let it also be made in heaven.
Amen.
