Jonah 1:1-8
1 And there was a word of Adonai for Jonah ben-Amittai, saying
“Get up and go to Nineveh, the great city, and call out to her that their evil has come up in my presence.”
So Jonah did get up—to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of Adonai. He went down to Joppa and found a ship coming to Tarshish. He made payment and went down into it, to come with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of Adonai.
But Adonai hurled a great wind at the sea, and it became a great gale on the sea, and the ship was about to be smashed.
The sailors feared, and each cried out to his gods. They hurled the cargo that was on the ship into the sea to lighten what was upon them. But Jonah had gone down to the stern of the ship. He lay down and slept deeply.
The captain came near to him and said to him, “What is with you, being deep asleep? Get up! Cry out to your gods! Perhaps the gods will consider us and we will not be lost.”
They spoke, each to his neighbor, “Come, let’s cast lots so we will know who is at fault for this evil upon us.” They cast lots, and the lot fell to Jonah.
They said to him, “Please tell us: Who is at fault for this evil upon us? What is your business? And, from where do you come? What is your land? And, from where are your people?”
