EXODUS to SONG OF SOLOMON
EXODUS: The Lord delivers his people from slavery with mighty signs and wonders (chapters 1-15) and brings them to Sinai (16-19), telling them there that they are to be his “kingdom of priests and holy nation.” He confirms their kingdom status by entering into a covenant with them as their king and giving them kingdom laws to follow (20-24). But that is not all! He is going to be a king who is near to them, dwelling in their very midst, and this is why he proceeds to give them directions for his tabernacle, his earthly palace (25-31, 35-40).
LEVITICUS: Begins by explaining the sacrifices that address sin and enable them to worship this king in the right way (chapters 1-7), provides them with priests to intercede on their behalf and lead them in worship (8-10), gives them laws to teach them how to deal properly with impurity (11-15), provides a yearly ceremony to remove every last ounce of sin and impurity from the kingdom (16), and provides a whole series of laws in other areas to direct them in living like a “kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (17-27).
NUMBERS: The story of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness for 40 years after Exodus.
DEUTERONOMY: Records Moses' final speeches to the Israelites.
JOSHUA: He takes over for Moses and the Israelites enter the Promised Land.
JUDGES: Tells of a time period when God would raise up individuals to act as a military leader and civil ruler who would lead the people to freedom – judges.
RUTH: Takes place during the time of the judges.
1&2 SAMUEL: Samuel is dedicated to the Lord by his mother and grows up to be a prophet and a bridge between the judges and the kings. He anoints Saul and then David as the first kings of Israel.
PSALMS: Mostly written in this time and into the time of KINGS.
1 KINGS: The life of King Solomon after the kingdom is passed to him from David. The kingdom divides.
PROVERBS, ECCLESIASTES, SONG OF SOLOMON: Written in this time.
2 KINGS: The various kings of Israel & Judah in the divided kingdom.
1&2 CHRONICLES: The religious history of Israel at the time of the kings.
