Devoted to Honor
Romans 12:10; Phil. 2:3-4
Pastor Jerry Koller
· There is something that is to be done.
· There is an object.
· There is a description for how something should be done toward this object.
In brotherly love (the description), we are to be devoted (the action that is to be done) to one another (the object—or recipient).
Devotion includes a high degree of commitment to a cause or to a specific person, activity, or cause.
The phrase “brotherly love” describes the devotion process.
· It is a love that is tender and affectionate; a love that shows great fondness.
Brothers and brethren are both terms for those who are in Christ. While they do not refer to brother as a sibling, they do carry with it the idea of family. Those in Christ are a part of the family of God.
Honor one another above yourselves.
· To honor means taking the lead in extending to others mutual respect.
The term vain conceit comes from a word which means boasting, pride and vanity.
The meaning of humility can be derived by the sense that it is the opposite of possessing selfish ambition or vain conceit.
Humility is the inward exercise of the soul that allows one to think of himself no more highly than he ought to think.
· Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up. (James 4:10)
· Without humility, one cannot come to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
· Without humility, one can’t possibly hope to give preference and honor to others.
The word should tells us there is a command to follow as well as a deficiency that needs to be addressed.
· We are required to be looking out for the interests of others as well as for our own interests.
· Many seem to fall far short of the goal.
“Look” comes from a word whose root meaning denotes those who keep a watchful glance on someone or something.
· It also has to do with the watchful glance one uses when taking aim in shooting at a target with the intention of hitting the mark or bull's-eye.
Balanced Outlook:
· We look to our own interests.
· We are to look to the interests of others.
“Interests” comes from a Greek phrase that is not so definite or easy to translate. The wording states that we are to look not to just our own something but to the something of others.
The mandate is you must love one another in this fashion—as Jesus loves us.
You see, a sincere love
...gives preference to one another
...is not selfish
...is not conceited
...is humble
...looks out for the interests of others

Nursery Update | Helpers Needed
Expand
Great news! Our nursery will reopen on Sunday, 8/1. We will be using the Infant Room (located across from the main women's bathroom). We have almost all new toys and will keep things fully separated from the daycare's stuff. Used toys will be sanitized every week to help prevent the spread of germs.
· RIGHT NOW: We need one person to serve on Sunday, 8/15 in order to fill our August & September schedule.
· FUTURE SCHEDULES: Volunteers are needed to serve on a rotating basis, hopefully once every 6-8 weeks. If you’re willing to serve in this manner, please contact Kim in the church office as soon as possible.
