· RIGHTEOUSNESS describes the condition of a man or woman who is rightly related to God.
· The PURSUIT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS compels you to honor God by living like you are connected to Him.
OUR Founding Fathers Had:

A DEEP REVERENCE for GOD and an UNWAVERING RESPECT and APPRECIATION of the TRUTH of God’s Word.
"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great Nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For that reason alone, people of other faiths have been afforded freedom of worship here."
Patrick Henry (governor of Virginia)

“It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible. Of all the dispositions and habits that lead to political prosperity, our religion and morality are the indispensable supporters. Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that our national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”
George Washington (1st president)

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
John Adams (2nd president)

“We have staked the whole future of our new nation, not upon the power of government; far from it. We have staked the future of all our political constitutions upon the capacity of each of ourselves to govern ourselves according to the moral principles of the Ten Commandments.” James Madison (4th President and primary author of the Constitution)

“God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their basis?”
Thomas Jefferson (3rd president)

“Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand…A patriot must be a religious man.” John Adams (2nd President)
"The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity."
John Quincy Adams(6th President)

HOW NOW SHALL WE LIVE?
WE ARE TO APPROACH GOD ON HIS TERMS
WHAT ARE GOD’S TERMS?
1. Become a CONNECTED people

“We recognize no Sovereign but God, and no King but Jesus!”
[April 18, 1775, on the eve of the Revolutionary War after a British major ordered John Adams, John Hancock, and those with them to disperse in “the name of George the Sovereign King of England .”
2. Become a HUMBLE people
“God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel”
– Ben Franklin, Constitutional Convention of 1787
3. Become a PRAYING people
A Prayer from George Washington’s prayer journal

…Increase my faith in the sweet promises of the Gospel…
Make me always watchful over my heart, that neither the terrors of conscience, the loathing of holy duties, the love of sin, nor an unwillingness to depart this life, may cast me into a spiritual slumber.
But daily frame me more and more into the likeness of thy Son Jesus Christ, that living in thy fear, and dying in thy favor, I may in thy appointed time attain the resurrection of the just unto eternal life.
4. Become a GODLY people
“The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”

(letter from John Adams to Thomas Jefferson on June 28, 1813
5. Become a REPENTANT people
“Pardon, we beseech Thee, all our offences of omission and commission; and grant that in all our thoughts, words, and actions, we may conform to Thy known will manifested in our consciences, and in the revelations of Jesus Christ our Saviour."

Timothy Pickering, Revolutionary General; Secretary of State (The Life of Timothy Pickering by Charles Upham)

GOD IS LOOKING TO HEAR FROM:

· CONNECTED PEOPLE
· HUMBLE PEOPLE
· PRAYING PEOPLE
· GODLY PEOPLE
· REPENTANT PEOPLE
WHAT KIND OF RESPONSE CAN WE EXPECT FROM GOD WHEN WE COME TO HIM ON HIS TERMS?
1. God will LISTEN.

2. God will FORGIVE.

3. God will HEAL.
