Wisdom for Life - wk4 Wisdom with Decision Making

We live in the Information Age. We have all kinds of access to information, but what we really need is wisdom so that we can experience a life well-lived. The book of Proverbs aim is to grow us in wisdom. We're told to seek it like a treasure and we're encouraged to ask God for it. (James 1:5). wisdom > information

Quote:
Wisdom is the art of living skillfully in whatever actual conditions we find ourselves in. - Eugene Peterson

The TRUTH for all of us coming into the world - we don't enter with wisdom inside us: WISDOM IS NOT AUTOMATIC - BUT IT CAN BE ACQUIRED.
How many of you make decisions? = raise your hand.
Did you? Well, you decided too. So, the reality is we all make decisions! Today we want to examine wisdom as it comes to getting better at making good and godly decisions in life!
Today:
-3 “rights” in order to make better decisions
-Dismiss 1 MYTH
-5 key questions we should keep on the forefront of our minds as we seek to make decisions
-right posture (humility/seeking God)

Proverbs 3:5-6 -
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
-right people
We’re to surround ourselves with good people who can help you make good decisions / godly decisions as you live your life!

“A fool’s way is right in his own eyes, but whoever listens to counsel is wise.” -Proverbs 12:15
“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”
-Proverbs 15:22
-right place (internally)

Not too tired, not too late, not too pressured. Rested. You have given yourself space to reflect, pray and listen. (solitude helps settle your mind & body).
HIGHLIGHT a MYTH
=If I'm always in tune with God, he will guide all my decisions, and I will never have to make any decisions on my own. -wrong-

God's guidance will be there -- but NO parent makes all their kids decisions for them (that's not healthy) - part of helping them grow up and mature is to coach them in making their own decisions.

Becoming a good and godly person requires you to think things out, exercise judgment, sometimes make difficult choices in the face of uncertainty; take accountability - learn & grow…

That process is indispensable for the formation of a human being, and that means that many times in your life when you pray and ask for guidance, God's response is going to be: "You choose." Because you'll never grow if you don't do that.
TRUTH:
Our decisions determine the direction our life takes and our direction will ultimately determine our destination and our outcomes.
-right questions *5 key questions to ask as you're making decisions

*taken from: Andy Stanley's book: Better Questions, Fewer Regrets
great book - highly recommend for further exploration

-The Integrity Question: Am I being honest with myself . . . really?

-The Legacy Question: What story do I want to tell?

-The Conscience Question: Is there a tension that deserves my attention?

-The Maturity Question: What is the wise thing to do?
(see Eph. 5:15-16)

-The Relationship Question: What does love require of me?
(see Matthew 7:12 & John 13:34-35)

Summary:

Proverbs 3:5-6 MEMORIZE
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Good questions lead to better decisions.
Your decisions determine the direction your life takes and the quality of life you’ll experience!

Your regrets (and we all have them) are only a part of your story.
==They don’t have to be the story — your past should remind you, but it DOES NOT have to define you.

Truth:
WE ALL MAKE A LOT OF DECISIONS
WE ALL WANT TO GET BETTER AT MAKING THEM
WISDOM HELPS DO THAT
PURSUE WISDOM
