Chestnut Ridge Church
Timeline–Part 2
We all love stories. They make us feel like we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. They can stir the imagination and engage the heart. They motivate us, influence us, and have the unique ability to build connections. So, it’s no wonder that the Bible is the most beloved book of all time! In this series, Timeline, we’ll explore the stories that span 4,000 years of biblical history, from Genesis to Malachi. As we focus on some of the most beloved stores in the Old Testament, we’ll discover that in every story the overarching theme is God’s desire to have a relationship with us.

House of The Lord, Who You Say I Am, O What a Miracle, Way Maker
Problem | We struggle to understand how a good God can judge the world with a flood
Solution | God’s goodness is revealed through the story of Noah’s Ark
Archaeologists tell us that many ancient civilizations have a flood tradition with details paralleling the Genesis account. It is likely that these stories (involving their fanciful gods and goddesses) were corruptions of the original history of the flood that was handed down from generation to generation. –Wiersbe
• God’s goodness is reflected through the grief he felt over the badness he saw.
• God’s goodness is reflected through his willingness to start over.
Whereas antediluvian man plots evil in his “heart,” God’s response to their imaginations is a wounded “heart” filled with pain. The making of “man” is no error; it is what “man” has made of himself. –K.A. Matthews
The Flood shows the extent to which God will go to help bring about holiness and rest on the earth. It is here that the godly find encouragement—in God’s plan for good to triumph ultimately over evil. —A.P. Ross
• God’s goodness is reflected through his desire to warn the world about the coming judgment.
Jewish tradition understood the 120 years as opportunity for repentance. –K.A. Matthews
