Matthew 4:10

Matthew 4:10
Pastor Jerry Koller
Temptation #1
· If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.
· If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.
The devil capitalizes on Jesus’ hunger.
His challenge to Jesus—if you are the Son of God—is not an indication that he doesn’t believe Jesus is the Son of God. It is an acknowledgement that He is.
How did Jesus respond? It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ (Matt. 4:4)
Temptation #2
The devil’s quote comes from Psalm 91:11-12
Jesus quotes Deut. 6:16
Temptation #3
Jesus’ response:
Jesus quotes Deut. 6:13:
Afterwards:
Why did the devil tempt Jesus?
· It had to do with Jesus being fully God and fully man.
· It had to do with Jesus being fully God and fully man.
Jesus was a human being in every sense of the word—with the exception of sin.
If Jesus was not like us in very way—yet without sin—He could not have been our perfect sacrifice.
Many people have a tendency to think Jesus switched between His divine nature and human nature depending on the need.
· Some believe He performed miracles because He is God.
· Some believe Jesus knew certain things because He is God.
· Some believe He performed miracles because He is God.
· Some believe Jesus knew certain things because He is God.
Jesus was able to carry out His earthly mission because He relied on the Holy Spirit.
· He was Spirit-filled.
· He was Spirit-empowered.
· He was Spirit-led.
· He was Spirit-filled.
· He was Spirit-empowered.
· He was Spirit-led.
When Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert so that the devil could tempt Him, the tempter tried to get Jesus to do things only God could do.
The temptation of Jesus was a strategic, insidious plan to disqualify Jesus from being our perfect sacrifice.
APPLICATION
1. The Tempter is Still at It
2. The Tempter Looks For Weaknesses
Knowing he does this can keep us on our toes so that he does not catch us off guard.
3. Know the Word of God
Part of the armor includes...
4. Live by the Spirit
Remember
***MASK UPDATE***
In response to recent state and federal mask recommendation changes that vaccinated individuals may now enter public spaces without a mask, we are making all of our gatherings and facilities mask-optional. For the time being, we are still asking that everyone maintain a safe distance from one another as an added precaution. Our desire is to both honor those who have chosen to get vaccinated by allowing them to attend mask-free (if they so desire) as well as respect those who have chosen not to receive a vaccination. We ask that everyone respect one another's personal convictions. In addition, please be sensitive to those who would rather not engage in physical greetings. As always, our first goal is to maintain the unity of Christ while also making every effort to equip one another to live out our faith.
Happy Birthday!
