The Good Life - Beatitudes wk5

The Good Life - Beatitudes wk5

The Beatitudes set forth the blessings God gives to those he is working in—blessings given not as a reward for our merit, but as a gift of His grace. Here is a Christian value system and God’s kingdom ethical standard—all of which are often at odds with those of the non-Christian world in which humanity functions. Blessed are those that recognize their spiritual bankruptcy and thus their need for dependency upon Christ and his gifts of grace. They will experience the God-life and a true good life.

Jesus’ teaching on what it means to find godly happiness and the God-lived life! And that the God-life is better than what the world tries to push as the good life!

The Sermon (Matthew ch. 5-7) is probably the best-known part of the teachings of Jesus. It is also perhaps the least understood.

It is Jesus’ own description of what he wanted his followers to be and do.
Here is a Christian value system, and God’s kingdom ethical standard—all of which are often at odds with those of the non-Christian world in which humanity functions.

The Beatitudes set forth the blessings God gives to those he is working in—blessings given not as a reward for our merit, but as a gift of His grace.
Quote:
“The Beatitudes simply cannot be ‘good news’ if they are understood as a set of ‘how-to’s’ for achieving blessedness. They would only amount to a new legalism". ~Dallas Willard

series takeaway:
The pursuit of the good life (that this world says to seek) will ultimately let you down, but the pursuit of the God-life will lead to real joy and true blessing.
today, we’re examining the next phrase that Jesus utters in the Beatitudes that deals with mercy...
Matthew 5:7
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

In the kingdom of God: mercy trumps judgment. Mercy matters! It's all over the Scriptures.

Those who have experienced divine mercy are themselves shaped and fashioned into merciful people. This takes God’s transformational power working within us, it’s not natural to be merciful.
We must begin by understanding that mercy is not something God does. Mercy is who God is.

God’s mercy is essential to his being, which is eternal, infinite, and inexhaustible.

GOD CAN NO MORE RUN OUT OF MERCY THAN HE CAN RUN OUT OF HIMSELF.
Jesus shares his mercy with us so that we can become merciful.

We’re to exercise mercy - not just think merciful thoughts - we are to have merciful actions. Jesus shares his mercy with us so that we can become merciful.

Q) Do you remember the Good Samaritan story??
Luke 10:36-37

36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.
37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”
Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”
Go and Do the same.
Mercy is action oriented; it’s not just a philosophy to believe or a concept to understand - mercy’s got gestures and activity to it.

Mercy isn’t afraid to touch human suffering - to interact with it, and doesn’t ignore it. It gets involved.

Mercy is not afraid to cross barriers and maybe even violate norms (whether they are ethnic, cultural, or religious).
== mercy sees the need, so mercy responds to it!

God’s mercy meets us NEW every morning…

Lamentations 3:22-23
The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness;
his mercies begin afresh each morning.

His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.

The English word NEW (AFRESH) is the Hebrew word = hadas
== It means “never before experienced" - it's literally new each day!
