The Good Life - Beatitudes week 3

The Good Life - Beatitudes week 3

The Beatitudes set forth the blessings God gives to those He is working in — blessings given not as a reward for our merit, but as a gift of His grace. Here is a Christian value system and the ethical standard for God’s Kingdom — all of which are often at odds with those of the non-Christian world in which humanity functions. Blessed are those that are humble. They will experience the God-life and a true good life.

Series Takeaway:
The pursuit of “The Good Life” (the one this world says to seek) will ultimately let you down, but the pursuit of the God-life will lead to real, lasting joy and true blessing.
“It is well to note that they are be-attitudes, not do-attitudes. They state what the subjects of the kingdom are—they are the type of person described in the Beatitudes.” - J. Vernon McGee
Humility -
The dictionary definition is “freedom from pride or arrogance.”

The Biblical definition goes deeper than that. It is a healthy recognition that God is the Great “I AM,” which means I am the lowly, "I am not."

Humility/Meekness are literally translated, “lowliness of mind,” so what's being described is not just an action -- it’s a way of thinking/being.
The phrase “inherit the earth” is an indication of receiving eternal life, but it means a bit more than that. This phrase indicates that the humble will receive a position of authority in the afterlife. Not only will the humble receive eternal life with Christ, they’ll be high-standing citizens of Heaven!
SNAPSHOTS IN THE LIFE OF PETER
Humility cannot exist inside of me when I am trusting in my ability over God’s ability.

Instead, humility is recognizing ALL of my abilities come from God
Matthew 26 is a long chapter describing the night Jesus is arrested. In verse 31, Jesus tells the disciples to pray so that they might not fall away. Peter declares he would never turn away from Jesus. Jesus then foretells that Peter would deny Him three times that night!
Humility is not enacting the will of God in MY own timing.

Instead, humility comes by submitting to the sovereignty of God.

It is trusting that nothing happens outside the will of God.
Later in Matthew 26, Peter denies Jesus three times.
Humility cannot exist inside of me when I deny my relationship with Christ in order to protect myself or my reputation.

Instead, humility comes when I rest in the fullness of my relationship with Jesus and in who He says I am.
When I’m walking in humility I no longer need to tear others down to build myself up. Instead, I see that I am fully loved, and because I have all I need in my relationship with God it enables me to love all -- even those who are hard to love.
Humility is best able to grow within me when I fully understand the cost of the mercy of God.
“We often think humility is timidity, shyness, or weakness. But the humility God imparts to us takes root in the soil of our souls, and as we water and fertilize it by faith, courage and conviction begin to grow in us. We become stronger because our confidence is in God - not ourselves. Instead of having self-confidence, we have Godfidence.” - Dr. Derwin Gray
How are you trying to grasp to make yourself equal with God?

Reflect: What is God asking you to do tonight?

Repent of the ways that come to mind on how you try to make yourself equal with God, and write some comments on how you want to live differently -- starting tonight and going into this week.

How can you live a life that recognizes God is the only One with the proper power you need?

How can you live a life that considers others’ needs before your own?
