CONVERSATION STARTERS
Conversation Starters help us dig deeper, connecting Sunday’s sermons with our Monday lives. These prompts have been designed to help Community Groups grow in their relationship with God, with one another, and with their neighbors. Please know that these questions are meant to be a resource to you. You do not have to follow them verbatim or get through them all. We trust you to know your group and to ask the questions based on your group needs.

1. What stood out to you from the sermon?

2. Paul says joy is found in selflessness (Philippians. 2:3-4). What’s your gut reaction to the statement that joy is found in selflessness?

3. In Philippians. 2:2, Paul asks the local church at Philippi to ‘complete [his] joy’ by being and doing particular things. What stands out to you about the things he names and why?

4. Out of a desire to participate with the Spirit (Philippians 2:1), how can you embody this call to serve others in your house, workplace, and community group?

PRAYER PROMPT
Pray that the Holy Spirit would give us conviction, and that we would courageously partner with God's Spirit, to give up our rights and serve those in our lives this week.

Philippians 2:1-11

Title: Joy in Selflessness
Scripture: Philippians 2:1-11
Speaker: Reid Kapple, ReidK@ChristCommunityKC.org
>> We can’t be full of joy if we are full of self
>> Joy goes up when division goes down
“The reason we haven’t solved the race problem in America after hundreds of years is that people apart from God are trying to create unity while people under God who already have unity are not living out the unity we possess. The result of both of these conditions is disastrous for America. Our failure to find cultural unity as a nation is directly related to the church's failure to preserve our spiritual unity.” -Tony Evans, Oneness Embraced
>> Have a disruptively unifying experience
>> Joy goes up when preference goes down
“Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call 'humble'...always telling you that...he is nobody...All you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him...He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.” - CS Lewis
>> Ask others what they need
>> Joy goes up when we follow Jesus down
>> Put yourself in a place of obscurity
“The next time you are in a competitive situation, pray that the others around you will be more outstanding, more praised, and more used of God than yourself...Rejoice for their successes. If Christians were universally to do this for each other, the earth would soon be filled with the knowledge of God’s glory.” -Dallas Willard, The Celebration of the Disciplines
>> Joy goes up when we fall down
