Giving What Is Due
Matt. 22:15-22
Pastor Jerry Koller
Setting:
· Jesus had entered Jerusalem in a very celebratory fashion.
· People lined the streets.
· They placed clothing and palm branches on the ground.
· They shouted declarations of praise as Jesus and His entourage passed by.
· Jesus addresses the commercialism taking place within the courts of the temple.
· He healed the blind and lame.
· He taught His disciples.
· He taught in the temple courts.
· He had run-ins with the religious leaders who questioned His authority to speak on behalf of God.
The religious leaders wanted to arrest Him but could not because Jesus had too many followers.
· Perhaps there was a way they could enrage His followers.
The Herodians were a political group of individuals who were loyal to the Herods.
Parallel account in the Gospel of Luke:
The Trap - Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?
Jesus sees through them - You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?
The Illustration - Show me the coin used for paying the tax.
They brought him a denarius…
· A denarius was a Roman coin that was made of silver.
· The amount doesn’t matter.
· What mattered was the portrait of the person on the coin.
...He asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?”
· The “heads side” bore the image of the Roman emperor.
· The “tails” side of the coin would have been an inscription in his name.
Caesar’s,” they replied.
The coin was Caesar’s because his image and inscription in on the coin.
· The tax is giving back to Caesar what is rightfully his.
Summary: Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.
I want to caution you to not try and make this passage say something it is not saying. Back in the 90’s, I had a member of my church try and convince me that Christians—especially pastors—should not pay taxes to the government. Our loyalty to God exempts us from being taxed by an earthly institution.
Jesus’ two-fold response was brilliant.
· Give to Caesar what is Caesars.
· Give to God what is God’s.
The Greek word that is translated “give” in verse 21, means “to give someone his due.”
APPLICATION
1. There are Limits
· We do have governing authorities over us which have been established by God.
The rights of earthly rulers find their absolute limit in what is due to God.
2. Earthly & Heavenly Kingdom are Not Always Incompatible
· Jesus exhorted His listeners to obey earthly laws provided they are not in conflict with God's commandments.
· Jesus did not say how one must act in every particular situation.
3. Spies Are Everywhere
· Watch out for their tactics.
· The only way you can safeguard yourselves against their tactics is to know and hide the word of God in your hearts.

Couples Retreat: 4/8-4/10 or 4/16-4/18

You may have heard the phrase – “Come apart before you come apart.” Jesus said something similar to his disciples when he gave this invitation: “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” (Mark 6:31). Life is demanding and complicated. Without intentional practices of rest and renewal none of us are able to keep perspective. This is especially true of marriage relationships. Without tending, the spark that brought a couple together can begin to fade. Lake Ann Camp’s Couples Retreat is perfectly designed to stir the embers and reignite the flame.  Whether you are just beginning the marriage journey, or have been married for decades, you can expect to be encouraged and filled with hope for the days ahead. Practical messages, engaging activities, and quiet moments provide rest and renewal. Join us at beautiful Lake Ann Camp and discover life at its best." Cost is $185-325 per couple, depending on your housing choice. Doug & Julie Zantello are going 4/8-4/10 and Rob & Brandy Zantello are going 4/16-4/18.  If you’re interested in carpooling or have ?’s, feel free to contact any of them. For more information or to register online, go to:

Pictures Needed

As Rocky Starland continues to put history videos together, he is seeking church related pictures from 1970-present. If you have any available (church plays, Pumpkinfest, potlucks, etc.), please either drop them off in envelopes and put them in his church mailbox. Please include information about each picture: people's names, what the event is, and any other helpful details. Also be sure to put your name on the envelope so we can return the pictures when we are done. If you’d like to bring digital copies, please make arrangements with Kim.

Greeter Needed

If you are able to serve as a Greeter for any of our Sunday worship services this month, please let Kim know ASAP.

We Care Food Pantry Collection

Please bring a canned good or other non-perishable item(s) with you when you come to worship each week for the We Care Food Pantry.
