Matthew 13:24-30; 36-43
Pastor Jerry Koller
Matthew 13:24-30; 36-43
Pastor Jerry Koller
Matthew is the only Gospel that records this parable.
In verse 24, Jesus said, The kingdom of heaven is like…(NIV). Those two words “is like” tips us off that Jesus is using an illustration—a parable—to teach a spiritual truth regarding the kingdom of God.
In five other places in Matthew 13, Jesus seems to make the same statement. He says:
· Vs. 31—the kingdom of heaven is like… (mustard seed)
· Vs. 33—the kingdom of heaven is like… (leaven)
· Vs. 44—the kingdom of heaven is like... (hidden treasure)
· Vs. 45—the kingdom of heaven is like… (pearl of great price)
· Vs. 47—the kingdom of heaven is like... (a net)
· Vs. 31—the kingdom of heaven is like… (mustard seed)
· Vs. 33—the kingdom of heaven is like… (leaven)
· Vs. 44—the kingdom of heaven is like... (hidden treasure)
· Vs. 45—the kingdom of heaven is like… (pearl of great price)
· Vs. 47—the kingdom of heaven is like... (a net)
A better translation would be ...The Kingdom of heaven may be compared to…(NASB, ESV).
Here is the comparison. The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. (Matt. 13:24) None of Jesus’ listeners would have been unfamiliar with what Jesus was saying.
In summary, we have:
· 1 field
· 2 sowers
· 2 kinds of seed
· 2 methods of sowing: one normal, the other abnormal.
· 1 field
· 2 sowers
· 2 kinds of seed
· 2 methods of sowing: one normal, the other abnormal.
While in the house, Jesus’ disciples came to Him and asked Him to explain the parable of the Wheat and Weeds. In response to their request, Jesus explained the parable to them.
· He identified the sower.
· He identified the field.
· He identified the good seed.
· He identified the sower.
· He identified the field.
· He identified the good seed.
Son of Man is a title Jesus often used in reference to Himself.
· It emphasizes not only His deity but His humanity as well for He is fully God and fully man.
· It emphasizes not only His deity but His humanity as well for He is fully God and fully man.
The field represents the world, same as it did in the previous parable.
The good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom—the only seed capable of bearing fruit (as the Parable of the Sower and Seed illustrated).
Jesus then identifies the weeds and the enemy. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. (Matt. 13:38b-39a) The evil one and the devil are one and the same.
Clearly there is a conflict going on in this illustration.
· Two kinds of seed were sown.
· Two kinds of crop start growing—side by side.
· One crop is considered good. The other is not.
· Two kinds of seed were sown.
· Two kinds of crop start growing—side by side.
· One crop is considered good. The other is not.
The mystery becomes clearer.
· Jesus sows good seed—sons of the kingdom—in the world.
· The enemy, the devil sows bad seed, weeds—not sons of the kingdom but sons of the evil one (the enemy, the devil).
· Jesus sows good seed—sons of the kingdom—in the world.
· The enemy, the devil sows bad seed, weeds—not sons of the kingdom but sons of the evil one (the enemy, the devil).
Jesus continues His explanation. The harvest is the end of the age…(Matt. 13:39)
· End of the age reflects finality.
· The age Jesus is referring to is the period of time between His first and second coming. At the end of the age, crops will be gathered at the harvest.
· End of the age reflects finality.
· The age Jesus is referring to is the period of time between His first and second coming. At the end of the age, crops will be gathered at the harvest.
Jesus said, ...the harvesters are angels. (Matt. 13:39)
Then Jesus explains the spiritual truth the parable illustrated. As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. (Matt. 13:40)
· There will be a time of separation.
· Fruit will be preserved.
· Weeds will be disposed of.
· There will be a time of separation.
· Fruit will be preserved.
· Weeds will be disposed of.
Jesus said, They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matt. 13:42)
· Anything and anyone contrary to the kingdom will be disposed of. Evil will be done away with.
· Anything and anyone contrary to the kingdom will be disposed of. Evil will be done away with.
