Going Deeper is designed for use with your small group, a friend, or on
your own. Its aim is to create time for you to spend with God and his word. Do as much or as little as you like. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact one of our pastoral staff.
1.Pray for each other, our church, and our leaders, for personal and corporate renewal, and to allow God’s word to transform us. Share a recent entry from your Life Journal with the group.
2. This Sunday we looked at the greatest invitation ever: “Come to me all who are weary ... and I will give you rest.” Who doesn’t feel burdened and weary these days? But this offer of deep soul rest has a catch – it requires a willingness to take on the yoke of Jesus, which he promises will be light. What thoughts or questions did the message raise for you? Which ones, encouraged you or posed a challenge to you?
3. Read Matt 11:27. Jesus makes a remarkable claim that he alone fully knows the Father. Contemplate this intimate reciprocal relationship within the Godhead. How do you think his hearers responded to that claim? What does this claim mean to you? Why do you think keeping Christ central in our study of Scriptures is so important? What are the implications if we don’t keep him central?
4. Read Matt 11:25-26. What is God hiding from the wise and intelligent?
What does it mean to be like little children? How are you like/not like a child in your spiritual life with God? What does v26 communicate about Jesus’ relationship with his Father??
5. Read Matt 11:28. What do you think Jesus is referring to when he mentions burdens and weariness? If you haven’t already done so, share with your group one or more burdens that you have had to carry this past week. How different or similar are they to the burdens that Jesus is referring to?
6. Read Matt 11:29-30. What is the yoke of Jesus, and why is it easy and light? What are the circumstances by which someone might not want to exchange their burdens for Jesus' yoke? How do you sometimes bear burdens that Jesus offers rest from? What action can you take to avoid this in the future?
7. Take a moment of silence to consider how God is speaking to you. Is He asking you to make changes or to do something new? What concrete steps of response do you want to take? How can your group support you in these steps?
