CONVERSATION STARTERS
Conversation Starters help us dig deeper, connecting Sunday’s sermons with our Monday lives. These prompts have been designed to help Community Groups grow in their relationship with God, with one another, and with their neighbors. Please know that these questions are meant to be a resource to you. You do not have to follow them verbatim or get through them all. We trust you to know your group and to ask the questions based on your group needs.

1. What surprised you about your practice of theFormed.life this week? What was difficult?

2. What stood out to you from Luke 21?

3. Many people read passages like this and become anxious. How does this speak comfort to followers of Jesus?

4. We want things that are wrong in this world to change, but so often we also struggle with judgment. Are these sentiments compatible or not, and how?

5. Why do you think Jesus taught so much about the coming judgment? What purpose do you think He had in mind for explaining that these things were ahead?
Title: Watch Yourselves
Scripture: Luke 21:1-38
Speaker: Reid Kapple, ReidK@ChristCommunityKC.org
>> Only one kingdom lasts until the end
“The exterior of the building wanted nothing that could astound either mind or eye, For, being covered on all sides with massive plates of gold, the sun was no sooner up than it radiated so fiery a flash that persons straining to look at it were compelled to avert their eyes, as from the solar rays. To approaching strangers it appeared from a distance like a snow-clad mountain; for all that was not overlaid with gold was of purest white.”
-Josephus (Antiquities)
>> Life in the kingdom that lasts:
- Anticipates hardships with hope

“The facts make clear that [this sung faith] did serve to deepen the capacity of endurance and the absorption of suffering...It taught a people how to ride high in life, to look squarely in the face those facts that argue most dramatically against all hope and to use those facts as raw material out of which they fashioned a hope that the environment, with all its cruelty could not crush.” -Howard Thurman
>> Life in the kingdom that lasts:
- Anticipates hardships with hope
- Pays attention to attention
- Expects God at all times

We believe in the personal, bodily and glorious return of our Lord Jesus Christ. The coming of Christ, at a time known only to God, demands constant expectancy and, as our blessed hope, motivates the believer to godly living, sacrificial service and energetic mission. (EFCA Statement of Faith)
“A continual looking forward to the eternal world is not (as some modern people think) a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do. It does not mean that we are to leave the present world as it is. If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next.”
- CS Lewis
