What is something that was handed down to you from someone who came before you? Maybe it is something you enjoy, a hobby, a skill, traditions, or way of doing something. Who is most responsible for passing this on to you, and who were the other people from your community that were also involved in passing that on to you?

Who is most responsible for passing this on to you, and who were the other people from your community that were also involved in passing that on to you?
Bottom Line: Leaving a legacy for the next generation is my responsibility and my opportunity.
1. Legacy is a shared responsibility between the home and the church.
DISCUSSION BREAK:
Who was most influential in passing down to you what you knew and understood about faith, whether that was unbelief or whether it was Christian faith? Who else was part of this community in addition to whoever was most influential?
Read Deuteronomy 6:4-8. Think through each verse and talk about what the expectation is for each home to leave a legacy. When, where, and how is it supposed to happen? And now make it practical – when can you be doing this, even if you do not have children in your home? What are practical ideas of how you can accomplish this?

2. God expects me to leave what I have received for the next generation.
3. I have to get involved with the next generation.
DISCUSSION BREAK:
Read 2 Timothy 2:1-2. What do you think are the “things” that Timothy had been taught that Paul wanted him to pass on to others? (Hint! Take a peek at 2 Timothy 1:8-10.) If Timothy did not obey this command, what would have happened to the next generation?
Now make this practical for us today! Paul told Timothy to pass on the things he had been taught. Psalm 78 told the people to pass on the “glorious miracles” that they had experienced. What have you received that needs to be passed on to future generations? What have you seen God do in your life that can be used to lead them to Jesus? What is unique to your story that can benefit someone coming behind you?

FINAL DISCUSSION BREAK:
Read Psalm 78:1-4 again from the first part of the sermon. How would this passage take on a different meaning if you change the plural descriptors “we, our, us, etc.” to singular, “I, my, me, etc.”? How does the original text with plural descriptors involve every one of every age and regardless of family status in the shared responsibility of leaving a legacy of faith?
As a part of the church, what do you do or what can you do to be part of leaving a legacy for the next generation? Each person share one simple step that you can take to partner with the church and to partner with individual homes to be part of this community that is leaving a legacy for the next generation.
PRAY TOGETHER:
Take some time to pray for the families in your micro church to pass Jesus on to their children. Then pray for each person to take the step that was shared in the last discussion question. Finally, pray for our church to continue empowering people to leave a legacy and to partner with families to do the same.
