Worship Gathering: 1/17/2021

Worship Gathering: 1/17/2021

We are currently only having VIRTUAL WORSHIP SERVICES. In addition, all in-person activities have been cancelled. Watch our emails or check the website for how to participate virtually. While our place of worship has changed from the usual place and time, we are grateful to know that the Body of Christ can worship anytime, anywhere. And a building is just that - a building. The Church is the people, not the place where we worship. In these troubled times, our witness for Jesus Christ can be evident to those around us as we take wise precautions, while simultaneously living out our faith with what it means to have a peace that passes all understanding. May you be blessed this week as we see God at work through these unprecedented times. We can get through this together. Our God is able.

Two Parabolic Illustrations: Salt & Light
Matthew 5:13-16
Pastor Jerry Koller
Parabolic illustrations are not necessarily short stories.
· They are allegories—common symbols that represent some truth.
· All of them were common things that were very familiar to everyone.
Jesus is illustrating the influence the kingdom of God has in the world in which we live.
There were two primary uses for salt in Jesus’ day: to keep certain foods from perishing and to enhance the taste of food.
Salt of the earth:
· The earth deals with the world in which we live.
· The New Testament use of the word “world” stands in contrast with God’s kingdom and His principles.
· We help prevent the spread of wickedness.
· We are not the cure for wickedness.
But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
· Salt cannot lose its saltiness.
Jesus says we are also the light of the world.
· Light always has a source.
· We do not generate light on our own.
· We are required to let the light that we possess shine.
APPLICATION
Salt and light are two parabolic illustrations describe an important aspect of kingdom living, how you and I—as kingdom citizens—are to live in this present world.
God has strategically placed us where we are at so that as kingdom citizens, we can help prevent wickedness from spreading.
We do this by reflecting the light of Jesus that is within us - through good works.
· These good works are a result of the character the Holy Spirit is developing in us.
· They are works that bring glory and honor to God the Father, through the Lord Jesus Christ.
Let us purpose to live out our faith—individually and together—for the glory of God.
