Entering Genesis
Encountering God
2 Points:

1)The Genre of Genesis is “Family Novel”
2)The point of Genesis is a command: “Be fruitful and multiply”
Gen 1:1-2:3

1:1 In the beginning, when God created the sky and the land, 2 the land was formless and empty. Darkness was on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of
God was stirring on the face of the water. 3 God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw the light, that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “Day,” and the darkness he called “Night.” There was evening and there was morning, one day. 6 God said, “Let there be a dome in the middle of the water, and let it divide water from water.” 7 God made the dome, and divided the water that was under the dome from the water that was above the dome; and it was so. 8 God called the dome “Sky.” There was evening and there was morning, a second day. 9 God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry ground appear”; and it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “Land,” and the gathering together of the water he called “Seas.”
God saw that it was good. 11 God said, “Let the land yield grass, herbs yielding seeds, and fruit trees bearing fruit ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND, with their seeds in it, on the land”; and it was so. 12 The earth yielded grass, herbs yielding seed ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND, and trees bearing fruit, with their seeds in it, ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND; and God saw that it was good. 13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day. 14 God said, “Let there be lights on the dome of the sky to divide the day from the night; and let them be used for signs, for seasons, for days, and for years; 15 and let them be lights on the dome of the sky for shining light upon the land”; and it was so. 16 God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them on the dome of the sky to shine light upon the land, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good. 19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. 20 God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly over the land, over the face of the dome of the sky.” 21 God created the great sea serpents and every living reptilian creature, with which the water teemed, ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND, and every winged bird ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND. God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the water in the seas, and let birds multiply on the land.” 23 There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day. 24 God said, “Let the land produce living creatures ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND, livestock, reptiles, and animals of the land ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND”; and it was so. 25 God made the animals of the land ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND, and the livestock ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND, and every reptile of the ground ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND. God saw that it was good. 26 God said, “Let’s make a human in our image, after our likeness (ACCORDING TO OUR KIND). Let him govern the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, and all the land, and every reptile that moves upon the land.” 27 God created humanity in his own image; in God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them. God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the land, and tame it. Govern the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every living creature that moves upon the land.” 29 God said, “Here, I give you every herb yielding seed that is on the face of all the land, and every tree that bears fruit yielding seed. For you it will be food. 30 To every animal of the land, to every bird of the sky, and to every reptile upon the land in which there is life, I give every green herb for food”; and it was so. 31 God saw everything that he had made, and oh, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day. 2:1 The sky, the land, and all their array were finished. 2 On the seventh day God finished his work which he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested on it from all his work that he had done.
