Discuss: How do we walk faithfully through circumstances when what we see with our eyes betrays what we believe in our hearts?

Prophecy = an utterance, a doom, a burden
"Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted." Habakkuk 1:4
Habakkuk's Complaints
1. God, You don't seem to care
2. You aren't doing much when You could
3. What You are doing doesn't seem fair

A deeply committed believer can simultaneously express questions and faith.
Habakkuk wrestles but doesn't walk away from his faith in God.

PCC BENEDICTION
May you jump into the arms of Jesus and may He push out into the world. May you be healed as you participate in the healing of others. Not because you must, but because you may. This is why we were born!

BEYOND SUNDAY
Trust the Lord, no matter what. Easier said than done...especially after living through 2020! Habakkuk’s message for God’s people around the world today is that followers of Jesus can, and must, trust in God no matter how tumultuous circumstances may become. However trusting God is an ongoing process that involves wrestling, waiting, and worshipping Him. This week we focus on what it means to wrestle with God.
1. Some have called 2020 the worst year ever. Was it for you? Why or why not?
2. Reflected on Habakkuk’s opening complaint in Habakkuk 1:2-4. Note all the “why” questions. What is Habakkuk complaining about? How can you relate to these complaints? When have you felt like Habakkuk?
3. Do you complain to God or do you hold back? Explain why or why not. Where else in the Bible are you aware of people complaining or wrestling with God? (e.g. Exodus 16:1-3, Psalm 13:1, Matthew 27:46, John 6:61). Which ones seem wrong to you and which ones seem justified?
4. Gary Gaddini, our Lead Pastor and Sunday speaker, summarized Habakkuk’s opening thoughts into three major complaints (see below). Which of these have you felt in the past? How have you worked through it or are you still wrestling?God, You don’t seem to care. God, You aren’t doing much when You could. God, What You are doing doesn’t seem fair.
5. Reflect on the Lord’s answer to Habakkuk in verses 1:5-11. What are your thoughts on God’s plan? What other declared plans of God in the Bible are you aware of that you have wrestled with (e.g. flooding the earth, other countries being wiped out in war, Jesus having to die, etc.)?
6. Habakkuk ends Chapter 1 with a second complaint verses 1:12-17. In these passages, identify the faith and doubt in God’s words. Now, clarifying 3 reasons you truly believe in God and 3 ways you truly doubt God.
Note: Like Habakkuk, deeply committed believers, at the same moment, can believe God, honor God and yet still wrestle with and have questions.
