Welcome to FM First Baptist
Week 3 - Miracle of the Manger
What God did at Christmas he does in our lives every day. We may miss it because it looks so ‘ordinary.’ We quickly discount the miraculous and like the Pharisees demand signs in our day. So that it brings us to a crisis of faith. Is Jesus who he claims to be? If he is then can I really live my life on my own terms?

SONG LYRIC - What Child Is This
Expand
What Child is this who laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping
This this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste haste to bring Him laud
The Babe the Son of Mary

Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding
Good Christian fear for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading
Nails spear shall pierce Him through
The cross be borne for me for you
Hail hail the Word made flesh
The Babe the Son of Mary

So bring Him incense gold and myrrh
Come peasant king to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him
Raise raise the song on high
The Virgin sings her lullaby
Joy joy for Christ is born
The Babe the Son of Mary

SONG LYRIC - Child In The Manger
Expand
Child in the manger infant of Mary
Outcast and stranger Lord of all
Child who inherits all our transgressions
All our demerits on Him fall

Once the most holy child of salvation
Gently and lowly lived below
Now as our glorious mighty Redeemer
See Him victorious over each foe

Prophets foretold Him infant of wonder
Angels behold Him on His throne
Worthy our Saviour of all their praises
Happy for ever are His own

Song Lyric - Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me
Expand
What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy my righteousness and freedom
My steadfast love my deep and boundless peace

To this I hold my hope is only Jesus
For my life is wholly bound to his
Oh how strange and divine I can sing all is mine
Yet not I but through Christ in me

The night is dark but I am not forsaken
For by my side the Saviour he will stay
I labour on in weakness and rejoicing
For in my need his power is displayed

To this I hold my Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley he will lead
Oh the night has been won and I shall overcome
Yet not I but through Christ in me

No fate I dread I know I am forgiven
The future sure the price it has been paid
For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon
And he was raised to overthrow the grave

To this I hold my sin has been defeated
Jesus now and ever is my plea
Oh the chains are released I can sing I am free
Yet not I but through Christ in me

With every breath I long to follow Jesus
For he has said that he will bring me home
And day by day I know he will renew me
Until I stand with joy before the throne

To this I hold my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to him
When the race is complete still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I but through Christ in me

When the race is complete still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I but through Christ in me
Yet not I but through Christ in me

Luke 2:7
7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Luke 2:12
12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

Luke 2:16
16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.

1 The Birth in the Manger

Luke 2:7 (ESV)
7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
What God says and does supersedes any decree or deed of a man.
2 The Sign of the Manger

Luke 2:12 (ESV)
12And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”
Dumb animals know where to eat but Israel wanders hungry and afraid.
Now God comes near not as a stranger passing through but as one of his own to live among them.
Signs of his birth pointed to signs of his death.
3 The Visitors to the Manger

Luke 2:16 (ESV)
16And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.
God has come to give us peace.
The child is the long awaited Messiah.
God gave the world a sign his only Son.
What did the angel say about the child to Mary?

Luke 1:31–33, 35
31And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”35And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.
To Joseph?

Matthew 1:20–23 (ESV)
20But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
To the Shepherds?

Luke 2:11 (ESV)
11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
5 The Decision at the Manger

Luke 2:17–20 (ESV)
17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
What are the responses to the Good News?
We might tremble to approach a throne, but we cannot fear to approach a manger

SONG LYRIC - O Come All Ye Faithful
Expand
O come all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant
O come ye O come ye to Bethlehem
Come and behold Him
Born the King of angels

O come let us adore Him
O come let us adore Him
O come let us adore Him
Christ the Lord

Sing choirs of angels
Sing in exultation
O sing all ye bright
Hosts of heav'n above
Glory to God all
Glory in the highest

Yea Lord we greet Thee
Born this happy morning
Jesus to Thee be all glory giv'n
Word of the Father
Now in flesh appearing
